Exhaust is done, few questions about my motor...

Hi all,

Got my exhaust done yesterday, here is a quick video if your interested. Let me know what you think.
http://www.youtube.c...

Got a few questions about my motor.

1) What would I be able to rev my motor to before it stops makeing power and before it goes BANG?
Basic specs are
Std crank, rods
ACL flattop pistons .060 oversize
BIG camshaft. I can get exact specs if needed but its the biggest hydraulic one for a holden 6 CROW cams make.
Ported and polished and serviced head
HEI ignition
350 Holley on redline manifold
(Any more specs needed plz let me know, I would love to know what I can rev it to. I took it to just before 6 grand today when i took it for a drive and it still felt like it had more in it but realy dont want to go higher until I hear what some more experienced people think)

2) How soon are you meant to do your first oil change with a new motor? I've probably done 1-2 hours of engine running time since the cam run in. Dont know k's because ODO doesnt work and its unreg so only gets driven around property and occasionaly up the road for a quick squirt and to test things.

3) It blows a tiny bit of smoke sometimes if u give it to it (See video above) would this just be oil smoke because the rings arent 100% bedded in yet?

4) Does anyone know where I can get a speedo corrector box because my speedo is out due to celica gearbox?

Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers
James

I think James is fast becoming the most infamous member of oldholden.com. If I was you James I would not rev the motor above 5500RPM, you might break something. Maybe a Conrod through the side of the block, please do not try and prove me wrong. Cheers Gazza

Lol i wont try prove you wrong. dont worry, i realy dont feel like throwing all my money and effort away by being a d!ckhead.

8000 rpm is 2000-2500 more than stock conrods and bolts are comfy with !. Be no use revving that hard anyway as there will be no power after 6000 at best with only 350cfm of carb.

exactly why i dont want to rev it there. Thanks guys for helping me out here, now I know its not just me being scared to rev it. The cam thats in it's peak is 3700-7000 but i was worried about the rods aswell like you said, and the rockers are not strong enough to rev much higher.

Flexible drive: http://www.fdrive.co...
or Waddingtons: http://www.waddingto...
They both sell corrector boxes.
Waddingtons ($128) might be cheaper.
That smoke is probably unburnt fuel if you have a Holley on it.

I'd phone them. I can't find them on the website. You will need to know how much the speedo is out. You could check it with a GPS at 100ks or they will tell you how to do it.

Just dropped them an email because they aren't open on the weekend according to their website. Will try them Tomorow and if not Tomorow first thing Monday morning.

Probably won't be able to do it at 100 due to not being regoed and only having access to a quiet 50 k zone street.
I could just do it at 50 and double it couldnt I?

It'll be a few miles of hard road driving before your rings are fully bedded in. If the smoke is black then suspect unburnt fuel. Change your oil and filter now if you haven't already. When are you getting it regoed?

Will do oil and oil filter today. Do I just use the same oil again?
I'm registering it as soon as possible. Hopefully before July 23 as that's when I go for my license but I have a few small things to do to it still and need to get the money.

Use fresh clean oil. Maybe change it again after 5hrs of running? Speak to your engine builder about intervals.

I meant to say do I use the same type of oil. because some people have told me to use a different type of oil.
I'm using 20W-60 non synthetic at the moment.

That should be fine. Some people do like to use a running in oil. I'd just be using and changing at what your engine builder says. If you don't and the engine has related problems down the line he may not agree to fix it.

Sounds good. I'm sort of my own with the engine now though. Long story short, he stuffed me around like crazy and I got sick of it.

Stick to 5500 rpm till run-in properly - vary your revs as much as possible - no over-revving or over-loading (slugging) at low revs. Use the gears! Once it's run in ((I'd give it at least 1500 miles), it sounds like your motor should be good for 7000 rpm - except for the carby! The simple solution would be a 465 Holley, on an "Aussiespeed" 4-barrel manifold - or you could go to multiple carbs. i'd go for the Holley - much easier to keep in tune, and almost as much performance. As it is, it sounds great - not like a big fart, like alot of the late model cars I hear with loud exhausts! I'm glad there's still some young blokes with good taste! Wait till it's run in before you rev too hard. Remember, you had to learn how to walk before you could run - likewise, you must learn how to drive, before you drive fast. The 1/4 mile is a great place to practice. Keep up the good work!

Thanks mate, I'm still concerned about taking it over 5500-6000 because of the standard rods. I was considering a 465 because I was told they actually get better fuel economy due to the primaries being smaller that the 350 2 barrels.
Yea I love the sound of the exhaust. It's not to loud just has a nice note to it. And sounds great under load aswell.

Hi,

It keeps pre igniting or "running on" whatever you call it when you turn the car off and it keeps trying to run for a few seconds after. I went down a heat renge in plugs like my uncle said to do but it still does it. Should I go down another heat range or is there another solution? We used a timing light and My timing is at 6 degrees advanced at idle so that shouldnt be the cause i wouldnt think.

Rich Mixture or Air Leaks are big causes of Running-On.

Rich Mixture provides Carbon that glows, Air Leaks make any Coke glow.

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

Thanks T, will look into it. Air leaks would make sense because my manifold vaccum port needs attention.

If the cam is good for 7000 rpm, the standard timing is useless! Try a bit more advance. Forget the timing light - get the timing to the maximum revs, then retard a few degrees. If it won't start, retard a bit more until it will. Ideally, you should have a dissy re-mapped to suit the cam, but if you can't afford that, you'll have to improvise. Either way, you're gonna need more than the factory advance for that cam to work! You could check with the cam grinder to see what advance they recommend - that would be a good starting point.
