Box noisy
Hello all
Got an Aussie fourspeed. All gears have always been noisy particularly lower gears and feels almost "abrasive" when pushing up into third for want of a better word. Checked oil found full to plug. Can't see anything in linkage to cause gritty feel engaging gears. Fine otherwise.
Can anyone tell me if these are typically noisy? Or should I start looking for a replacement.

noisy 4 speed
they shouldnt be noisy, provided it shifts ok it sounds to me like yours needs a bearing kit put through it. if the shifting is not good it may need new synchro's and possibly hubs/gears as required (the dog teeth can wear out)
this is not overly difficult or expensive. kit probably around $100, synchro's around $30 each or so, maybe $2-300 labour
Bearings
Hi there,
definitely your gearbox bearing you will notice it's quieter in 4th gear as the load is reduced. Don't be temped to buy a cheap kit as the circlips are half the size of the original and will pop the 1st gear one off easily. If you have it pulled down make sure you install new syncros for peace of mind. check the cluster (the big bit) has no ware inside where the needle rollers go.

if the noise is in 1st, 2nd and third...but not in 4th, it indicates countershaft ( cluster is another name) bearings as most likely culprit, esp if noise increases proportionally with engine rpm in those lower gears.
4th gear is a direct coupling with power coming straight thru the front and out the back ,( but the countershaft still is spinning, but in this direct gear has no load), which drops the noise right out out...
if noise increases with engine speed proportionally in all 4 gears, its yr input shaft bearing...
no big deal these are cheap to fix if only bearings ...

Thanks. Got my eye on a complete toploader bell housing and shifter to suit for a grand. Might change box.
