1 wire alternator convert to 3 wire.can it be done ?

hi. hope there some one who can help me. i brought a 1 wire alternator for my old HQ 308 not knowing the 3 wire is better. the alternator i got name is a Proform. part number 66445.14N . 140 AMP. my question is can it be changed to a 3 wire set up. it has 2 male electrical spade at back of alternator ones marked 1R and other is 2F they are side by side toghter and not in use. what are they for? can they be used to hook up a 3 wire set up ?. the only other wire to alternator is the charge leed to the battery. so is there a way to change from 1 wire to 3 wire?. thanks

Late Model Alternators only use 2 Wires, Battery Output (B+) and the Indicator Wire because they have Internal Regulators.

The Alternator you have will need external exciting so it needs the Indicator Wire.

Use a Voltmeter to make sure it's charging.

from what i found on the web. the R1 spade goes to the dash gen light and the 2f spade is just a very short jump wire to B+ on back of ALT. but wont this short jumper lead cause drain on battery when engine is off ?. so with this set up will it be a 3 wire alternator now?

think its a voltage senser wire. can put it to the batt+ on alternator or better the main fuse wire that is live when engine is on. check you battery volts when hooking this wire up. best have a full charged battery when testing this.

you dont need to use the 2f just hook the r1 up to your alternator light lead which will be your brown wire, what would make you say that 3 wire is better??

well i dont know if 2 wire or 3 is better. not sure of my facts but as i under stand the 2f wire is senser wire that tells the alternator even if battery volts are ok the rest of the system is under load EG- headlights, driving light on thermo fans,heater fan. if this not the case what is 2f wire for?

When the Battery is a long way from the Alternator you get an undesirable Voltage Drop. Let's say that was 1.5 Volts.

The Alternator would be producing the correct 14.2 Volts but the Battery would only be getting 12.7 Volts which would leave the Battery constantly undercharged.

The 2F Wire causes the Alternator to raise the Voltage until the Battery sees 14.2 Volts.

That means the Alternator would produce 14.2 + 1.5 Volts meaning 15.7 Volts to keep the Battery happy.

ok now i under stand f2 wire with lose of voltage over wire distance. could you use f2 wire to feed off a wire in driver cab to bring up voltage as you get a bit of voltage drop to drivers cab @ and when system is under load. but then i sopose you could over charge the battery trying this. whats is the best volts at battery 14.3 ?

Yes, but only when the Wire is carrying Current (Headlights on). When there is little or no Current flowing (Headlights off), the Voltage drop will be tiny and not measurable.

Yes, that's the way I do it. I run the Sense Wire directly to the Battery and take the Cabin Feed from the Starter Tap. That way the Dash gets more Voltage because it is between the Alternator and the Battery.

Not the way I do it. My way, the Battery sees the 14.2 Volts it needs and the Dash gets a little bit more. Say around 14.8 Volts.

Most late model Alternators are 14.2 Volts. The Voltage is matched to the Battery. No Maintenance Batteries like 14.2 Volts. The Screw Cap type that you need to periodically refill with Distilled Water tend to need 13.8 Volts.

When the Battery and Alternator are close, like in an Old Holden the Voltage drop is very small. That's why most People connect the Sense Wire directly to the B+.

I have my Alternator B+ connected to the Starter Tap. The extra distance the Alternator Current flows is where I pick up the extra 0.6 Volts.

Basically I make the Alternator work a little bit harder to achieve the same result at the Battery, but that's what I want from a big Alternator.

It's likely the Sense Connection.

The Sense Connection can be connected directly to the B+. It's mostly used when the Battery is a long distance from the Alternator as in a Truck or Bus.

I measured the Sense Current on my Bosch 85 Amp Alternator recently and the Current Drain was less than 1/10000 Amps meaning it draws way less than the Electric Clock.
