Performance Engine Cranks

Did the early X2 crankshafts have any machining differences (larger fillets etc) to the standard crankshafts, given that all cranks were forged/steel pre Feb 1967.

Cheers, Mick.

The only difference I know is that they should be running the neo rear mains seals. Shouldn't be any knurling near the back of the crank to fling oil. They are proclaimed to be much stronger than cast cranks, though I've never ever had any break of either type. Apart from that, there's nothing else I personally know about them. I've got 4 of them here, but haven't compared them personally.

I'd rather drive my old holden than a new ford!

Thank you OB, so were only the performance cranks running neo seals back then?

Cheers, Mick.

Steel cranks were only in neo rear main engines, so they were not being made when rope seals came along. I looked at a 186S block and steel crank on the weekend for $150 but there were no main caps and $400 for tunnel boring is not in my budget!

Yes, from memory and as DaveEH said, I'm sure the steel cranks only ever had reap mains NEO seals. I don't mind the neo seals. I've never had dramas with them, but people say they don't last as long as rope seals. Actually took me some time in my earlier days to figure out how to get rope seals to do their job without leaking, but once you figure it out they're quite good.
