Dodgy starter motor?

Hey guys, went to start the 308 this morning and head out for a cruise. Turned the key and all I got was a few soft knocking sounds and then nothing. Might have been very weak efforts at cranking?

Battery read 12.39V has new dizzy, leads, coil, plugs and was running beautifully the other day?

How do I check for sure that's it's the starter?

Thanks.

Battery may be shot even though it is showing voltage.
Clean the battery terminals and inside the clamps with emery cloth/sand paper/cleaning tool.
Remove and clean the main connections to the starter.
Try again.
If no go then make absolutely certain the car is in park or neutral and have someone sit in the drivers seat with their foot firmly on the brake pedal
Use a screw driver to bridge across the main terminal on the starter and the start terminal and see if it turns over.

Check voltage with multimeter, and keep it connected as you turn the key to start and see where it drops to while trying to crank.

That should answer some questions.

So I was under the car about to undo one of the wires on the solenoid of the starter and the spanner accidentally bridged with the adjacent terminal and whoah the starter jumped... So I figured it was still alive. Then I pulled out all the wire connections to the black relay box and tried to clean then up a little, but could only clean the male parts... put them back in place and cool, the starter works again.
Should I replace the relay and wiring? You can buy a universal kit from resto country for $30.

Thanks guys
