Hey guys, I have a question about a leaking thermostat housing and water pump on an old red 308.
I recently replaced both with new ones, and used new high tensile bolts, but they are still leaking. Any ideas? Thanks.
Thanks guys.
Yes I matched up the bolt lengths, yes I used a new gasket and yes I used permatex ultra gasket (black tube) on both sides of gasket.
I'm just hoping it's not the timing cover that's the problem!! Hard to tell really.

yes it may be leaking from them...assuming gasket surfaces good, threads correct, torque right, gasket sealed..I'd be looking carefully for leakage at bolts...Maybe even try some teflon tape?

your welch plugs to make sure one of those isn't leaking if around the sump...it's possible the timing cover gasket ...but the coolant will go all over the place esp with a fan blowing it...it's good if you can pressure test the system when cold as it can highlight leaks well....whats the inlet manifold like? they are prone to leak due to corrosion..also check the water pump bearing tell tale as they can leak from there..I bought a new water pump (Indian) from Repco for a 308 and it leaked from the bearing from brand new...took it back and replaced with a Japanese one and an extra $15 and no leaks...there is a little hole underneath and it drips coolant onto the crank pulley..which can make it look like around the sump..worth checking

Thanks Andrew, that sounds like it could be the issue. It does spew quite a bit of coolant on the floor, mostly from the area around what looks like the crank pulley just behind the balancer. The other place it leaks out a lot on the floor seems to be further back toward the rear sump.
It is a brand new water pump, and I thought it was the good one as its a Gates one. I think I got it from Repco.
Cheers

The area of the manifold where the housing bolts on to is fairly poor shape with some corrosion as it is the original.... I've cleaned it up and sanded the area, but I'm wondering if it will ever seal properly.
Anyone else had a solution to this problem?

I've had a few of those manifolds corrode and leak mainly around the front bolts...I've had them repaired by having them welded and machined which at the time was cheaper than buying a new manifold..and maybe the same price as buying a good second hand one but each time it's been on daily drivers so just needed the job done and no time to look for good used parts..I'm wondering if a product like an alloy repair filler would do the trick..have a look at this vid..https://www.youtube....

Bolts
Did you check the length of the new bolts against the old ones?? they may need a thicker washer?? AL.
FJ Sedan, FJ Ute, all Steel.
Did ya use a gasket

Check if it leaking through
Check if it leaking through the bolts.
Something way back in the memory tells me I used to put gasket goo on the threads as well.

Ok. Thanks. I have just bought some thread sealer for when I put it back together...
Is it possible that it's also leaking from the timing cover? The leak seems to be further back toward the sump?
maybe check
