Stromberg Carby - hesitation on light throttle

was wondering if anyone may have had a similar problem? It's a Stromberg BXUV-2 on a 161 HR. Carby has been cleaned and had a basic kit put through inc new pump, float level, fuel pump and filter etc fine. Car starts and runs well, no problem with power or wide open throttle or idle. No missing. When cruising and slight throttle applied I feel a minor surge or hesitation. If I close the choke a little it goes away. So it's running a little lean on slight/partial throttle. I can't feel any movement in throttle shaft - no fuel leaks, manifold gasket is good and tight...no air leaks apparent...so I'm thinking something to do with the idle circuit ?- any insights - similar problem solved appreciated - thanks...

If the choke helps, maybe it is running a bit lean.
No air leaks apparent? use a spray bottle to spray around the the carby at idle.
Any change of revs usually indicates leak.
