gremlins in the wires

G'day peoples, hoping to pick some brains ..
I lost power the other night to my radio, interior light and dash lights, seems everything else worked.
Next morning i went into town intending to check fuses when i get back but when i got in the car to come home, everything works again .. now done a few short trips but no problem is raising it's head.
Obviously wasn't a fuse so any clue what can do that ? momentary shorting a bare wire somewhere or bad connection in a plug ?

Comments

Hey Dusty, Does sound like a loose wire or something, sounds like a combo that could all be on 1 fuse as well, i have seen th eold whit plastic shrouded connectors been pushed on with the actual male part beside the female part not actually in it, the plastic will hold it on but not make proper contact. i would try wiggling wires under dash while having radio on see if you can isolate where it is that way.

if a wire was shorting it should blow a fuse. So the issue you had sounds more like an open circuit or high resistance somewhere in the circuit. The original wiring of a HX according to diagrams had a separate fuse supply to the radio - not shared with interior light or instrument lights. The radio lamp however as well as various instrument lamps eg speedo is fed from the same supply which comes via a connection at the light switch..which also feeds the dome lamp...so that is a common point except for the radio...I'd be looking for a poor connection/contact... I've had a fuse before that looked good but had a dodgy connection between the fuse wire and end cap - it wasn't visually obvious until i took it out and the end cap literally fell off. Maybe worth having a closer check. Poor condition of the fuse holder contacts can also be a problem.

I think my glove box light works of the cigarette lighter ?
Your could be on and the door not fully closed?
I do remember a gentleman in my club had that problem with his boot light in a HQ ss

This problem has been raised before and it will most likely be the earth from the battery where it attaches to the radiator support panel, or an earth from engine to rad support.
Undo the wire, scratch up the panel and connector, and refit.
Check all earths.

I went over everything but at the end of it all i still had no clue.
I went into town earlier and hit the washers .. gremlin came back so when i got home, i had a cuppa then off to suss that gremlin however .. everything works again, lol.
I now see my bodgey washer bottle wires are the likely cause, i got a crack in the wire's insulation under a metal clip .. fixed and time can be the judge.
Thanks :-)

So you lost everything on the first click of the ignition? I think your looking for a loose connection between the ignition switch and the fuse box or is the ignition switch loose?

most of the time I fix things properly, it ends up taking longer when I dodgie it because I have to do it again anyway.

No, he didn't lose everything on the first click of the starter, he lost a few things when driving.

Radio, interior light, dash light.
Many years ago my radio and mobile phone (in car) shut down for an instant, turned out to be radiator support earth.

I remember a guy here a few years back had issues with the washer button that blew fuses a lot and turned out to be a bad earth on the wiper motor πŸ€”
