Fan blower motor bearing repair

Hi all

I have a HJ Caprice 1976. It's the "stronger" 4-speed fan used for the factory aircon. As per usual, the heater / A/C fan motor is squawky and generally noisy. I've purchased another used one at not an insignificant price and, despite the seller (and I) testing it before mounting where it appeared to be OK, it too is noisy - probably worse.

I'm reasonably sure I can get the unit apart and back together OK. However, does anyone know the best method for bringing the bushes back to life? Are they sintered brass? Best cleaning method / lubrication method? The more I read online, the more confusing it gets, and the more it seems we need some old-school knowledge for this one.

Alternatively, has anyone successfully retrofitted a more modern fan-blower into their HJ (or equivalent) series with the full factory A/C box?

Thanks in advance.

my Statesman too has a noisy 4 speed fan...my experience with fans is that they sometimes seem fine on the bench but when you install them and are under "load" within the confines of the box/evaporator etc they sound noisy. I've heard of people using VB/VC fans and reversing direction as well as Daiwoo and Subaru fans..but have no personal knowledge re them...a bridge I have to cross at some point - hopefully someone can enlighten us...

The bronze bushes need to be removed and soaked in engine oil for a few hours, in the oven at about 150 degrees. (if the oil starts to smoke, drop the temp. until it stops). Do this when your missus has gone out for the day, she might not like you using the oven for "workshop" duties!

Sounds like a good solution...I'd suspect you mean 150F and not degrees C?..only because your idea made me look up some info here https://www.lencohea...
How difficult are the bushes to remove? Perhaps new ones can be bought if you go to the trouble of removing them..

150 C should be OK. To remove the bushes, you may have to drill a small (1/4") hole in the end case, so you can drift the back one out. You may be able to knock the front one out through the shaft hole.

Thanks HG - so I take it the bushes are sintered brass?
