Holden 179HP Carbie Options?

Hey Fellas,
I've really started to rebuild my old HP motor for my old girl, and just wondering some carbie options?...

The motor has had a 202 re-bore "so is essentially a 186?", and crow 35667 cam with new JP Helical timing gears. I've got a HEI setup for it and a worked 9 port head which will be running roller rockers. The head has 1-3/4" Intake Valves and 1-1/2" Exhaust valves. Valves are stainless steel ones. I've also got extractors to fit upto it.

Carbies I have is the stock single barrel stromberg with manifold, but I also have a set of twin 1-3/4" SU carbies "although I've gotta get around to make a proper linkage setup".

Has anyone got some advice whether the twin SU's will be the thing to use or is there something even better or more practical that I could be using? What are you blokes using on your holden sixes?

Oh, and the car in question will be used just a couple of times a week with the kids in the back, and going out on day trips/road trips etc etc. I'm not planning on doing anything too silly with it all but looking for a little more grunt than the stock stromberg carbie...

The young fella that use to work for me had a Webber carbie off a Ford I think it was a 40mm ?
He had a worked 6 and a 5speed box
I had triple SUs and a 4speed on a HR Ute back in the day and I was happy

Cool. Weber or SU's might be the go then. I'm currently just got a 4-speed Torquemaster in the car, but have a Celica W50 to put in. Waiting for better weather to get that in though.

I'd rather drive my old holden than a new ford!

The SU carbies are good, IF you have good carbies.
I have seen many people with SU carbies over the years who weren't happy with them. They usually had old carbies with worn throttle bushes that leaked air, which meant they wouldn't idle properly or hold their tune.
If you have slop in the throttle shaft bushes they will need reconditioning.
You can get Weber or SU kits, parts or reconditioned carbies from Eurocarb: https://www.dellorto... or through their Australian agent, Bits of Italy (BOI): http://www.bitsofita... I have got Dellorto bits from BOI and found them great to deal with.
BOI could probably help you with linkages.
Otherwise, as said above, a Ford Weber is great on a red six.
Or, triple Webers or Dellortos are magic.
Either way, the hardest thing will be finding someone who actually knows how to tune them.
And, whatever you do, make sure that five speed goes in.

Old is good.

Thanks David!
The 5 speed will most certainly go it. Heck, it cost me more than enough to buy all the bits to do the conversion in the first place, not to mention I don't go much on the shift feel of the 4 speed. To also add to that, having that overdrive gear will be handy.

Also, I've got a ford xf weber carbie in the shed with a varajet adapter plate but will see if I can come up with the right adapter for the manifold and give it a go. I guess it wouldn't hurt to experiment a little with what I've got here and see if I can come up with something good.

Thanks mate!

For power and economy go for the 34ADM off an XE/XF Falcon.

Thanks guys!
I've got a varajet adapter plate for the blue manifold, so I'll give it a go and see what happens! Thanks again!

If you've the ADM Weber I'd go for that first before the SUs.
You could a fair bit for the SU setup that you could spend on the car.

Yeah, I've got the Weber 34 here all ready to bolt on. Just waiting on a break in the weather so I can fit it. Not sure how much the twin SU's would be worth though either, but guessing a fair bit less that I'd paid for them.
