Decoding the ID plates on a WB Ute

Hi All,

This is my first post to the site, so hoping someone can help me out.

I have a WB Ute, and I am trying to de-code the ID plates.

I have started with the small plate located on top of the firewall, but I have become confused as the plate states it's a D (1974) but the WB's didn't come out until 1980.

Can someone help me, plates code is below.

*8M80LD L109949 B*

So far I have this worked out this information,

8 (Australian Holden) - M (Belmont as known in the HQ range) - 80 (Utility) - L - (202 High Comp) - D (1974 Model) L1 (Adelaide) - S/N - 109,949 - B: WB 4/80

I am confused as to why one letter represents it as a 1974 model and the B letter represents it as a 4/80 model WB.

Also I have a 253 red V8 that I would like to decode and find out what year model it was, and what vehicle it came out of, so if anyone can help me that would be much appreciated, I found a number starting with QR37... on it, is this of any help, there is also a number above the water pump with a clock stamped onto it, also I know its a 253, but I don't know if it is an L or H motor (low & high compression) where would I look for the letter? as I can not see it stamped next to "253" on the block, there was also another number stamped onto the back (left hand side looking from the back of motor), it was near the manifold part, any info would be appreciated, as I gather its one of the older and not newer of the 253 series.

I would also like to know what the following means decoded,

*WB8WM80 (I assume this means ute and perhaps what year)
*1991 - 67V (I assume this is the trim type, if anyone knows specific info that would be good)
*1J 032 - D (I'm guessing this is the white, that it is currently painted in?)
*NOV 83 is the build date on this bigger plate.

Engine (L14, I assume is the 3.3 202 High Compression?)
Tran: (M15 I take is the 3spd manual column shift?)
Axle: CV7 (Needing more info on this)

The other plate, also I need decoded, it firstly starts out with a rather large amount of numbers, starting with 1,2,3,4C,5B,6,7,8,10B...... and so on and so on, are these important?

It then reads 11-83 "DWB" I think and then a number 48297A

I know my friends with older Ford Mustang's have somehow been able to contact Ford USA and have the papers & information emailed/posted to them on a document, that details every bit of info on that particular car, can this be done with Holden too?

If you would like I am always happy to provide my email address, to have conversations via and not loose track of the information.

I am 19, from Queensland, this is my first project car, I am going to keep the 202 in it until I am on my open license and then I will put the 253 in it, I guess all I need to do is use V8 springs when I put the V8 in? is there any modifications I need to do?

*Also one last thing, can the 253 be started without the bellhousing? I saw a 308 on Youtube and it did not have the bellhousing the starter was mounted down near the sump, bottom of block area.

Sorry for the rather large post, I hope I can find someone to help me cover my questions.

Kind Regards,
Steven

The year number reset at 1981, so D is also 1984, which is good for a late WB.

is the body style for a Holden coupe utility...if the M was an N it would be a Kingswood coupe utility
CV7 I think would be GV7...that's a 3.55:1 ratio diff
The plate with all the numbers is the safety compliance plate those numbers represent the design rules the car complies with...
the 11-83 would be Nov 83 so a slight diff with the 84 from the D - maybe because it was late in 83 the other is early 84..not sure

The letter D for 1984 represents cars built from 1/9/83 to 31/8/84. So cars built in late 1983 are 1984 "models".
