EJ Holden Pinion Angle

I suspect my pinion angle might be a bit out,get a lot of vibration and gear jump out only going uphill. Thinking of trying some wedges at the back. Where can you buy wedges suitable for old Holdens, are they pretty universal?

I'd check for a tight front uni first.

That can show the same symptoms.

Thanks for the reply, how do you mean tight front uni, do you mean the yoke is to tight a fit in the bush in the extension housing?

How does it get tight, and what is the fix?

You have to tap each cap of the front uni joint to make it centre in the yoke properly.

If the joint isn't centred in the yoke, it will be stiff to rotate. Each time the tailshaft rotates the engine mounts will be flexed around, causing the problem you have.

You'll notice that as you tap each cap, the joint will become easier to move.

You will need to remove the tailshaft to do it.

Of course, both uni's may need replacing.

A failed front uni can be fatal.

he means the uni is binding on a leaf spring arrangement unless the spring bushes are completely shot I cant see the pinion angle changing like a commodore with shot control arm bushes.

After I finish the EK Im going to tow a caravan around Australia. Some days I think Ill sell the house and start now.

what have you replaced recently was this a problem after replacing uni joints ?
if theres been nothing replaced then its possible the rear saddle mounts on the diff housing might of broken the welds also causing the diff angle to alter under load up hill

Saddle mounts sound worth checking, couldn't see a fracture this morning but think I need to clean the whole area as it has a lot of dirt covering it.

See the attached files, front and rear uni's and front yoke replaced about 2 years ago, clutch overhauled and second hand flywheel and bellhousing put on just over a year ago. Gearbox rebuilt a year ago. Front and rear engine mounts replaced 6 months ago.

After clutch was rebuilt was jumping out of gear going downhill, still doing that after gearbox rebuilt, after replacing engine mounts (noticed when swapping front was actually broken) started noticing vibration and gear jumpout uphill but no gear jumpout downhill.

the saddle mounts can look ok sitting on stands or the ground
how i found mine had broken at the weld was i went to remove the diff housing to get my springs reset and when i lifted the housing the saddle plates stayed on the springs
also mine was eating up rear uni's and would "kick" bad when accelarating and it would get a vibration under load

common problem with early gearboxes jumping out of gear
usually the selector plate is worn
check the rear extension housing bush in the gearbox for excessive play too

Interesting, thanks for that, I could imagine that would create issues accelerating uphill.

By selector plate, you mean the lever on side of gearbox?

Yes I think the side cover needs an overhaul as wasn't done when gearbox was reconditioned, I got a new old stock sidecover and levers on ebay recently and found a source for new detent springs and balls, that's a job for later.

Being that I have the vibration issues going uphill, I think these issues probably aren't the side cover though.

I had wondered whether those metal parts could have sagged, they look such solid construction though

i doubt they would sag given there construction
my ej i had back in 78 use to jump out of top gear around 60 mph
the place i was working at we had a milling machine we set the bell housing up and found it had warped 30 thou on the box side
we ground it and it fixed the problem with mine

Being that the jump out started after the clutch was overhauled and a different second hand bellhousing was put on, I have always suspected the bellhousing was the culprit, the place that did it really didn't want to buy that though.

Bit of a pain having to take it back off myself though, does the engine have to be lifted to get the bellhousing off?

I had to cut V's in mine, tap them together and weld along the V's.

They had sagged so far that the gearbox extension was sitting on the cross member.

can be done without taking the engine out
i always separated the box from the bell housing was easier to handle
make sure the faces are clean where the box bolts to the engine and box surfaces

I was told a rumour that some EJ bellhousings were not machined squarely which caused jumping out of gear.
