I mentioned a week ago how I lost rear brake on Harley coming down some windies.
I did a brake flush yesterday and found the brake fluid and resivour putrid and water in it.
This is DOT 5 which I thought was meant to be better to repell absorption of water through absorption from the atmosphere or condensation. Anyway I had (or supposedly) the brakes done professionally about 2 years ago which is recommended. I find it hard to believe that it could end up in this state after 2 years on a bike that isn't ridden all that often and is garage kept. I'm wondering if the flips that serviced it used DOT 3 or 4.
Might be a timely reminder for some of us to check our old Holdens (or others) you may think "I only did it not that long ago" when in actual fact it was closer to 5 years.

Yep

Did they actually do the job at the time Bryan? It shouldn't look like that after a couple of years. I did a flush of the brake system on my fatboy 12 months ago and the outgoing fluid didn't look like that.

Keith, at the time, the amount they charged (full service plus a couple of other jobs) I would’ve thought they did the job and did it well. But I agree it shouldn’t have looked like that, I suspect they never touched it (considering that it’s all hidden under a chrome cover panel they probably figured I wouldn’t notice, which they were right). I’ll do it myself from now on.

Local Harley dealer did the work? I do my own work, that way I know it's done to my standards.
Buy a quality brake bleeder kit using compressed air. I have one and it's been brilliant. Many uses, not only bleeding brakes.

Keith. It wasn’t a Harley
Keith. It wasn’t a Harley dealership but a performance joint in the Hawkesbury that work on Harley’s, they advertised in Heavy Duty Magazine (I won’t bag ‘em out here).
I do do my own servicing a lot of the time, it was in getting new hand grips and Harley embossed white walls and a few other things done so I just got them to do the service at the same time.
Funny you should mention the vacuum bleeder, I bought one on-line last week, just waiting for it to arrive. I also bought a moisture tester (stick it in the reservoir and it picks up if there’s any moisture in the brake fluid)

Can you give me a link to the moisture tester please Bryan. Never heard of them before. It would seem the brake fluid flush was overlooked to be done by them as they sound a professional outfit. You were charged for it?
Cheers
Keith
Yes I was charged for it.
Yes I was charged for it.
Here’s the link, there’s a few suppliers of the same model and they’re cheap. I saw a fellow on YouTube use it. He has a channel called “law abiding biker” his name is Ryan Urlacher.

Thanks for the link. I've watched that guy before. I think it was oil changes or something like that.

Bought one of those testers. The vacuum he uses to flush the brake system is like the one I use.

I can’t wait to get them both
I can’t wait to get them both delivered, I’m gonna go and do all the cars and bikes, just so I can use my new toys.
