Any FJ gurus?

Hi All. I bought a 161 to hopefully put in my FJ ute. As when I got the ute it had no running gear. I’ve been on the hunt for a running grey motor but they all seem to be interstate. I need to know how to make the red six fit. Ive tried googling, called Resto County and Rarespares to see if there’s an adaptor mount but apparently not.
Ive tried google images thinking this used to be a common upgrade but can’t find anything.
I assume new mounts would have to be welded to the original crossmember?
Any help or piccys would be appreciated.

Hi.
You will need an EH sump and oil pickup to fit any red, blue or black motor into any early Holden prior to EH. The bolt pattern for the gearbox is the same for red and grey motors so a red can be bolted straight onto the grey gearbox if that is the way you want to go. However, you will have to upgrade the front suspension to a HD HR or even a HK HT HG with matching diff, brakes and master cylinder / booster etc from the same model. If you change from the original gearbox to any later 3, 4 or 5 speed boxes or autos etc, you will have to modify the drive train tunnel for clearance around your chosen box.
There will be plenty of other little things to change or modify too but it is still a very easy swap. Another way is to find a 138 red motor from a torana (2250?) as you may get away with using original running gear and suspension with it.
Good Luck.
Ron
PS: I have a 186 motor with an EH sump on it.....
PPS I also have a 5 Speed Toyota W50 gearbox but no adaptor kit...

Thanks Ron, the 161 I bought was taken out of a HD, although the seller was taking various bits and peices off and swapping them on 2 other engines he had (149 and a 202) so I’ll have to check the profile of the sump.
I do have a 138 that’s in a HQ ute and considered using this, but it would have been a hassle taking it out from its current position.
I had been looking at an EJ (grey) gearbox and was thinking of mounting this to the 161 and keeping the original FJ front end as I wasn’t keen on cutting the floor hump, although the HR disc brake front end would be preferable, for now I was looking to just get it as a runner/driver without out spending a heap on it to aid in moving things around at home. I read in Holdenpedia that you can mount a red in this fashion by welding some mounts to the original cross member but I can’t find out anymore.
Cheers

you could use the ej box but you will need to make mounts as the ej is different to the FJ gearbox mount
make sure youget the engine back as far as it will go this will allow clearance to fit a fan
the mounts for the red to the front end are fairly simple to do
you will have to modify the accelarator linkage it fouls on the rear of the engine
i used part of the linkage and a cable to get around the problem
also you will need to make a clutch bracket support to fit the red motor

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

I’m driving to Melbourne and back from Brisbane in the start of June, if you find a grey motor along the Newel Hwy or the main zHWY from Melb to Syd maybe I could help you out.
Cheers mate

Do yourself a favour & introduced yourself to Frank Tedesco in Wetherill Park, he's a grey guru & he could help you find one.
Any red that you retrofit will require engineering for rego & this means
retractable seatbelts, collapsible steering column, 2 speed wipers, upgraded front end & braking system.

not all red motors requirer engineering certs if you fit the 138 red its accepted as a upgrade i've done this and registered mine in a few states A C T , NSW NT & vic over the last 40 yrs and not needed a engineers certs generally a 10% upgrade is ok
i still run the vacuum wipers no seat belts factory column
same brakes same front end and rear only difference is it has 13" fe hubs and axles

In recent years the RMS have really cracked on modified vehicles NSW, you have modify a vehicle to make something for well then needs to be engineered, in NSW you can legally upgrade an engine 20% larger if it's in the same family of engines.

anything bigger than the red 138 requires a engineers cert and up grade on wipers etc but the 138 doesnt
also i know of a wb one tonner fitted with a 350 crate motor in NSW no engineers cert and registered wb never had a 350 chev option
so its not always the case where its legal but who you know and if you have the MVR authorisation ticket to do rego testing
so some vechicles slip through the cracks

I know what you mean, I had an AP6 Wayfarer upgraded from the 225 to a 245 and bucket seats and had to carry around an engineers certificate, that I never really understood as you could have stated that an AP6 came optioned with a 273 and bucket seats albeit the sedan

I spoke to my local Blue Slip guy when I bought the ute and questioned if it needed engineering with a red motor (149, 161, 173, 179, 186) and he said no. He’s a Hot Rodder himself and owns an FJ, but it was only a verbal, I guess he could change his mind once all the work was done.
I’m half tempted to take it to him and just say hey! Get this thing running, but I know it’ll be a case of “ka-Ching ka-Ching”
