Holden HX One Tonner Ute

Hi everybody. I have a few questions to ask.

I'm after a ol' one tonner ute like my father used to have back in the day. I've come across an opportunity that I don't think I can pass up, but i've never driven one of these "old" utes before.

It's a 1976 HX One Tonner, original 308 rebuilt with t5 turbo and an immaculate rust free chassis. Auto column shifter.

I would plan on using it as a daily driver, only highway k's though. Is this even a good idea?

Is it worth trading a 2015 vf commodore for it, in terms of value? I realize I am going from used to driving new school to an old ute. But it's always a dream of mine! My father would be stoked.

Any advice or suggestions is appreciated, because I have a big heart for the old one tonners but this is a new world I'm thinking of diving in to.

Cheers!

Older cars are certainly fun to own and tinker with, but as far as using one for a daily driver? I wouldn’t recommend. This is my opinion only and I’m sure others on here would disagree. I’ve done it in the past and it can be a pain in the neck, trying to start them on freezing cold mornings or just being temperamental and refusing to start then you’ve gotta try and diagnose why (always seems to happen at inoportune times). It’s so much simpler just jumping in a modern car and leaving, and comfortable too, good heater/air conditioning, stereo etc.
As far as the value of each, the HX will be going up as the VF is going down.
It sounds Iike it’s at a Dealership, I’d be asking to see proof that the engine has been rebuilt (receipts etc and exactly what was done to it, who the engine builder was)

I have complete confidence in my old girls and use them at every opportunity but I
am retired so don't leave home every day, there are several local tradies using workhorse tunnas & utes in my area, cold starts are not an issue in Qld though 😂.Things will wearout or break but same with newer cars, just a matter of being diligent with maint etc and the bonus is you can prolly do that yourself and not pay service centre prices. I say go for it and enjoy

"Junk is something you throw out 3 weeks before you need it"

19 years ago I went with a new drive line
Out with the 253 auto and in with a TPI Chev Th 700
I’m a fifo worker so when I’m home it gets a run at least 2-3 times when I’m home for 11 days, it’s also on car club rego,
It’s starts first go and the looks my kids get at school when I drop them off is priceless from dads, grandparents and other kids. My son is in grade 3 an says all the big kids high five him all day
I love my “Old Holden” But even if I had a 9-5 job I don’t think I’d drive it to work ever day
P.s then again Surfman, I don’t drive like an old fart that’s just had a hip replacement 😲🤣🤣🤣

No ABS aircon traction control etc etc can't park any where don't stop like a modern car power in the wet etc be careful how you tread if you grew up with modern cars in the handling department etc.

You'll notice a huge difference in comfort, convenience, etc going from 2015 to 1976. That's 40-odd years backwards. But you'll get a lot back with the smile on your face as you drive the tonner. All I can say, is if you're not sure, get someone who knows old Holdens to check it out. Most parts aren't hard to find, but the prices have gone stupid, beware the "Monaro Tax".
Good luck..

I did it mate, 2015 SS wagon great power when demanded great fuel economy etc etc have since sold it while still in VGC, on the slow scout for an oldie again. HJ HX HZ or similar is me I reckon. Good luck, can you sell the VF without trading as lose money big time there straight up. Dealers are there to line their pockets not yours. Is your VF a V8 or a ute please, cheers Lindsay.

you say you have never driven one before - I suggest you do. A 308 HX would go well compared to the smaller engine versions of a HX - but in comparison to a modern car you would probably be disappointed in the performance and especially the fuel economy. I've got a 308 WB and I have a good income but it would cost a small fortune to be an everyday driver. I've got a VF as well and it's a great car and if forced to make a choice between having only one car to use as regular transport I'd pick the late model car. Reliability, performance, safety, economy and comfort...cars have advanced and improved enormously. Maybe something to consider is to have the HX as a weekender and enjoy it for what it is and get yourself a small cheap later model run about to use a majority of the time - you kinda get the best of both worlds - but it comes down to what you can afford etc...
