Which Alternator HT v8?

took my alternator in to the auto electricians to replace. Apparently they don't just bolt in anymore. Mine is an old style with the pronged plastic pin at the top with an external regulator and will need some wiring done because the new ones only have an internal regulator. I don't know electric stuff but just wanted to know is the the best way these days? Apparently better and more reliable. They don't rebuild them anymore apparently

Would I need a 55amp or 70 amp? These are the ones I see for sale. My car is a 308 red motor . It does have electronic ignition but other than that, is all original

Also I thought I may be able to get a 2nd had one from the early holden wreckers. Not ideal but it should be cheaper and bolt straight in.
Thoughts?

do you know what is wrong with the old one? If a winding has failed then it wouldn't be worth rewinding...but if a diode in the rectifier has failed, worn brushes or a bearing problem it could be easily repaired...you might need to find an old school auto electrician or a motor rewinder...the factory alternator fitted to a WB statesman - so 308, many electrics inc ignition system was 55A so that would be ok...if you go higher it has the ability to charge the battery quicker but you may have to also upgrade wiring size depending on what you currently have fitted..

If its the same as HG then they came standard with Bosch with an external regulator or Lucas with an internal regulator.
Later models had Bosch with internal regulators.
It depends if you want an upgrade to the latest available alternator that fits (which would be my choice). I'm sure if you want originality there'd be some Monaro fans that would know where to get the original unit repaired, but you might pay for the privilege. Good luck!

all great advice mate, I just found this I am sure Repco (65686673) in the town you are in would have/get one of the older style if that is what you prefer and bolt it in your self?

a small business auto electrician in town saw me walk in with the unit and said " Thats out of a HR!" said I din't need to buy a new one and would go over the old unit, bearings brushes etc.. He had all the parts in the back of his workshop. $140 for the rebuild. Dont know if thats good or bad but much better than the $450 quoted for a new one that also needed the car re-wiring work to accomodate the internal regulator?
Thanks Guys for the advice!

I think that's very reasonable and fair - if you don't have the parts and equipment/know how to do yourself... bearings and brushes tend to be common areas that wear...otherwise general heat and ageing eventually can affect the insulation of windings and impact diodes..alternators are quite reliable esp compared to DC generators...
