starter motor dramas continuance ... grrr

So I thought I had it sorted, car was starting first click every click for the last few weeks, then .... Fkn tick tick tick.. Bloody thing started acting up yesterday.
What I noticed was that the brand new relay (30amp fused 4 pronged relay) i put in to replace the old I figured was faulty, was getting warm to the touch even when the car was not running, ignition off. So I disconnected it and the car starts first click again.
My question is that it has always had a relay there its factory loom leading to it, but what the hell does it do?

Basically they give you instant amps if it's hot usually there is a shortage maybe amp wires off lower voltage has been used ,bad earth etc wrong relay as for standard what model is it again etc cheers.

You indicate the engine is a 202.

Does it have 202 cast into it or is it the original blue 3.3 or 2850?

It may be that someone tried to run 202 ignition in the car without really understanding the car's needs.

A standrd VC has no relay associated with the ignition.

Im the third owner, the first was a girl who bought it from new then a guy that i bought it off who did lower the suspension and things like that but I dont know what else to do with the wiring has been done.

The relay on the starter wasn't factory its been added by someone to hide from a voltage drop somewhere(ignition switch). The idea was the relay is switching a full 12 volt onto the starter motor solenoid
Since its been brought up whats the inductive load rating of a bosch relay in my real job as rule of thumb I try not to go past a 5th of a contacts rating for an inductive load(small single phase fan in most cases).

Why is it ok for an old bloke to drive an unroadworthy[Naughty Pottyword] heap?

It may also have been to prolong the life of the ignition switch by keeping solenoid sparks isolated by the relay.

I've known people to do that on pre-Kingswood models. My impression is that the sliding type ignition switches used in Kingswoods and Commodores are much tougher.

I expect the relay to have much less inductance because the nelay holds a little armature and the windings are finer than the starter solenoid.
