ok my 202 has a starter motor issue which is sending me batty..
1: it sometimes starts first click. no worries at all.
2: sometimes it throws out and just clunks without engaging.
3: sometimes it just clicks and I have to tap it.
4: sometimes it just spins without engaging.
5: sometimes it will start 1st click, but if its cold and doesnt stay idling, itll just click and not start.
usually one of these things happen when theres a problem, not every symptom in the book at different times.
the starter motor is the second one in a year due to these issues, the previous one wasnt old either, so this one is only 6months old.
the extractors do sit pretty close to the solanoid, closer than a standard exhuast setup so I realise heat soak could be part of the problem.
but any ideas on how to get around this issue is appreciated
thanks
Grant

Stater issues
Assuming the starter is good it's most likely a voltage drop in the wiring and or switches. Add a relay to the starter circuit to take the load off the old wiring and switches and give the starter good clean voltage.

Starter
Check the leads going to it wriggle them sometimes they have a break in the wire from heat ,seen a ford used to do a disco when ever it rained and wouldn't start it was a crack in the earth lead the big one ,other then that my guess is soliniod on the starter is full off dust etc.

Battery Terminals
Are these clean?
I smother them in grease which prevents the problem from recurring ..

yep
Yeah definitely, grease muggr be an idea I don't have any of that blue protective stuff but lately with all the starter issues its worth putting anything like that on since disconnecting and reconnecting it constantly lately
Take it to an auto
Take it to an auto electrician.
Sounds like you are spending money chasing your tail: two starters plus a battery.
A sparky will have the right gear and know how to diagnose the problem.
As David said above, a relay in the starter circuit can make a big difference.
David
Old is good.
a lot of sparkys don't give a [Naughty Pottyword]
Sparkys don't seem to care about cars like mine coz often times the wires are all molested and then they charge like all crap if they fix it im going with a cheaper option atm... Plus my old battery was t holding charge so i bought a new one for that reason.

reduction type starter?
if its the original starter the new replacement will be smaller, wrap some of that heat shield wrap around the extractors where its close to the starter.
Whats wrong with Melbourne drug addicts sleeping all over the footpath trying to scab money?
yep done that
Even went got metal heat shield bent it through between extractors and starter then placed rubber backed heat shield between that and the wires so it won't short out ... No real difference
I got a smaller reduction type
Yeah its the reduction type I chose it coz if (at original time of purchase) I had any dramas with it I didn't have to pull the exhaust off every time an issue happened like with an original size starter...

What's the CCA rating of the battery?

Starter Test
Check the starter by bridging between the +ve and the solenoid connection.
If it works reliably I would consider the Ignition switch to be faulty..

yeah I did all that too
I've recognized the ignition switch as dodgy already so ive bypassed it and put in a switch so i dont go pastvwhere the red lights come on.. From that point i use a toggle switch in place of the ig ition, easy to install savesy ignition barrel etc from wear
Alternative Ignition Switch
An earlier poster worked a similar problem and came with this ...

i never thought of a diode
I just put a fuse in as a precaution
what is...
What exactly is 'resistance ignition wire" ?
Ballast Reistor
Info here ...
http://holdenpaedia....
Wire can be bought that has so many ohms resistance per foot. Often called Resistance Wire.

oh ok
My car too young for that I think
Agree
VC, no ballast resistance.

new switch
why not just replace the ignition switch it won't be that hard to find 1? you might find the dodgie join in the loom while your at it.

there's a guy on eBay use to sell cleaned up 'Reco' old ones
The price for one of these ignition switches was like $125 or something... I got a bunch from pick a part and found they were in crap condition ... I pulled apart one of them cleaned it up the rollers were a bit pitted etc the spring had lost a bit of tension, i tried to mix n match from another one i opened, seemed to get it ok, installed it, and found that adjusting it for start and accessories was a nightmare, come to think of it, i think the reason i put alternative switch in was coz I wanted acc ... It was a compromise as well as a wear saver, on the ignition key, barrel etc
No start
Test as T has suggested, and if it works ok, then seriously consider running a new power lead direct from battery to fuse box.
Had the same problem on a HZ Tonner and the Auto Lec fixed it this way.
Another way is fit a relay to the starter so it gets full power when starting.
Just realized relay was the first suggestion from hq308.
The wiring on old cars can be a problem.
Solenoid
Sounds like the copper switch contact plates in the solenoid are flogging around and causing intermittent and varied results.
hard to get..
Its hard to get good quality new parts for old cars these days
Good parts
Yes it is hard to get good quality parts for older cars,
Most parts are made in some Asian countries ya need to find on google,
A gentleman in my car club in Cairnsβs bought a full rubber kit for a EJ sedan was made in beleave it or not,

Whats wrong with Melbourne drug addicts sleeping all over the footpath trying to scab money?
i tried to pull it apart
The screws holding the solanoid on were done so tight maybe with thread lock or something I couldn't budge em
