HP STAMPED BLOCKS

Just curious... someone told me a long time ago I don't really remember who exactly but they reckon the HP blocks were stronger than non HP stamped blocks because they had Nickel involved in the casting of the blocks, he was refering to 186 blocks though, from memory. I have a 179 hp block so thats why im wondering.
I dunno much about it but is that true or bull[Naughty Pottyword]?
I the holdenpeadia page it says nothing about that.
Thanks
Grtant

It's "bulls poo" HP stood for high performance & it was compared to the little 149!
No 186 was a HP only the 179 cubed engine from the EH range, many believed that was special because of it's steel crank but all red 6's had steel cranks until about mid 1967 this includes 149,179 HP EH, 149, 179 HD, 161, 186 HR.
Some people say that they had thicker walls but again it's most likely "bulls poo" again.

It's not BS.
The179 HP did have thicker walls, but the 149 had thicker walls again.
The reason for the thicker bore walls is quite simple: the 149 and 179 had a smaller bore than later 186.
The block casting did change at the web at the back lower edge of the block. The web got longer from 179 to 186. The 202 was bigger again.

Old is good.

So I'll be correct in saying if a HP & or a 179 were reco'ed as a 186 the side walls would be exactly same thickness as a virgin bore 186?

My old HR Ute had a 179hp - 192 with a 161 head and triple su’s
The old mechanic that rebuilt the engine said the HP had thicker walls and was the best thing for what we were going to do with the engine. Mine had HP stamped on the block,
I wish I had photos of it but as I live in Cairns’s Nth Qld, I lost a lot of stuff in a cyclone years ago

As I always say
Stay safe all
