161 head on blue 202 block

Putting a 161 head on blue 202 head
Do you have to drill out the water jackets in the block to suit the 161 head (use 161 head gasket as a template)

What push rods do you use

Do you have to do anything else

Just curious wouldn't a 202 12 port flow better in standard form?
I have a HQ 202 with a 161 & we used the 202 push rods & I'll say yes to drilling out the water jackets.

If you use the adjustable 161
rocker gear you will need to use
the shorter 186 pushrods.

See push rod lengths here ...

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

I wouldn't use any of the factory rockers. They are a disaster. For the small outlay put roller rockers on it. You won't look back.

I had Y/t rollers and 7/16 screw in studs .. lasted 9 years in my daily .. one roller trunion collapsed (no mess, yay), anyway i was too poor to buy new Y/T rollers and original rocker gear wont fit because i have studs so hesitantly i tried crow steel rollers for under 300 bucks and i'm sold, been trouble free for a year now.

My HX daily use a 173 blue head on a 202 (+060) and pinging is a big problem so be warned.
Also i have put a 161 head with oversized valves onto a red 202 (also +060) but i've never fired it up yet .. no big hurry as i already know it aint going to be pretty, lol.

My 202 with 161 XU1 spec'ed head only has 9.75 comp because we built it to be a reliable tow engine it's only has +20thou 12cc dish tops.
So if ya mindful of the bore & piston combo the compression won't be through the roof & it shouldn't ping at all if it's timed correctly.

I had a HR Ute
With a 179hp block done out to a 192 with a 161 head and triple su’s and a 4 speed and went really well
I can’t understand why people do the red head on a blue block ?
I mean the red head is a 9 port and the blue is a 12 , one would think a blue 12 port head that’s been port and polished with good value and spring and rockers would be the best way to go instead of a custom fitting the red head to the blue block
BUT it’s your car and your money
Just my thoughts

I'm with you on 9 ports on blue engini but I guess you have more choices on inlets with 9 port head's.

This is my 161/202 with +20 12cc dish tops with 9.75 comp, the head itself is only a match ported high comp with a slight machine to clean up the surface, we've fitted XU1 valves & heavy duty spring's.

Any opinions on using a high compression 173 red head with XU1 valves compared to a low compression YT Stage 3 head.
I've got an LJ 173 motor and was half thinking about putting the 173 head on my spare HP motor when I get around to building it.

Old is good.

Flat tops should fix it, I have a high comp 161 head on my 202 & did the opposite as I wanted the comp to be around 10 & fix it by using 20thou over 12cc dish tops.
