GDay Guys

Just got back online and got an email about the data centre we are in is moving so I have to make some decisions. The site may go offline for a small while to keep things cheap. I'll post the email below.

To our clients:

From everyone here at WebNX we hope you have had a great start to the new year! I am sure you have noticed over the years we rarely send out announcements however we have important news regarding our Los Angeles data center. After months of negotiations with our current data center landlord and various buildings in the LA area we have concluded it’s in our client’s best long term interest to relocate to Equinix’s LA3 datacenter.

Some of the notable perks of the move are:

Equinix is one of the most prestigious global colocation providers. We have had many requests by our loyal client base over the years to expand into foreign and domestic markets. By adding Equinix’s services to our offerings we can now do more for our clients., As with any quality data center Equinix offers N+1 power with multi utility feeds & generators, N+1 on all cooling system, along with the highest quality onsite security in the business, and so much more.

The LA3 facility has most certifications our clients have been looking for such as HIPAA, ISO 27001, NIST 800-53/FISMA, PCI DSS, SOC 1 & 2 Type II.

Unlike our old location which required we create special relationships with providers so they would pop the location Equinix already has one of the most connected network offerings on the planet. Mix that with our Coresite One Wilshire pop and we now have access to the best network offerings in the LA Metro area.

Additionally, all racks from day 1 will have the option for dual power feeds at no additional monthly charge. Please contact sales to see if your server can be upgraded free or requires a one time charge if this feature is important to you.

We have a few different options for clients.

Option 1: The first and most common will be a physical server relocation. We have already worked out a moving crew and purchased a moving truck to allow quickest migrations. Most moves will be done after hours (9 pm to 4 am PST / Local time most days of the week). For clients that require daylight hours please be aware that local Los Angeles traffic will result in greater downtime compared to night time windows but we will have day time slots available for those who need it. Regardless of which window you choose your server will retain its current IPs.

Option 2: Order an upgraded server at the new location and migrate your data and then cancel the old server. You will be able to keep your current IPs with this option.

Option 3: For those looking for maximum monthly savings, we would like to offer lower cost servers out of our Utah data center. For those who are willing to allow server relocation we will offer a month of credit along with a monthly discount (hardware dependent but starting at 10% off). For any server greater than three years we will offer two months of credit.
We are planning to be fully moved by March 31st, just under two months from this notice. Unless you choose otherwise we will be planning to move servers to the new Equinix LA3 location and our staff will be opening a separate ticket to schedule your move. If you have been planning to do an upgrade this year now is the time to chat with sales and get it done ASAP!

Some questions clients might have:

Will my IP Change?
--No, we have already set up a brand-new top of the line network at the new location and linked back to the current data center with multiple paths. We took the opportunity to upgrade the network to the newest generation Cisco ASR 9000 routers with 100G distribution line cards since both locations are going to be live simultaneously. Servers will also now have a number of new offerings such as 10/25/100G public and private port options!

What is the projected time of moves?
--By the time you read this we will have already setup the new DC with fresh switches, rebooters, and rails for the servers. We will be giving a window of 4 hour for the night time moves and 8 hour windows for day time moves. We expect once things get rolling we’ll be able to shrink those projections down to 2-3 hours for night time moves. We don’t expect many clients to opt for the physical move from LA to Utah as those moves would be 24-36 hours.

What if I have a private network / cluster of servers?
--The preference would be to move all servers sharing the same IP space at once but we understand if that isn’t practical and will try to work with you, perhaps moving half the server then the other half.

What if we have direct provider xconnects?
--Anything out of our One Wilshire pop will be live at the new DC, we have already turned up dark fiber and DWDM with hundreds of gigabits of connectivity.

During the move we will be making a major change to the IPMI setup and rolling out a much newer KVM on demand setup. Please make sure our staff is aware you have IPMI configured on your servers so that it’s IP can be changed over to our new protected IPMI network . The new IPMI system will allow you to to whitelist IP’s within our client portal system or if you prefer just open a ticket and our techs can whitelist them for you. We will also be phasing in a new HTML5 KVM setup for the clients that need temp KVMs for troubleshooting and reloading servers. Most of our newest gen servers also have HTML5 setup IPMI’s, it’s time for java to be retired and we’re doing our part to make that happen.

We are also upgrading the backend/private network to newest generation Nexus 9000 switches which allow 100Gbps links between different segments of the data center. We will be integrating this with our point-to-point links between data centers which will allow clients to connect their servers between our different locations on fast true ptp link vs slow GRE tunnels that are commonly used. Later this year we expect to offer custom anycast setups where you can have a server on the same ip in all of our locations with a private link between them to sync up data to make your own CDN, redundant dns, etc.

Is the company being sold or the management changed? No, all management and owners you have grown to trust over the years work here daily and operate with zero outsider influence. This was tossed in as many of the older companies in our industry have been sold off / merged / had stakes taken by VC firms which have drastically changed their customer experiences. The only corporate level change was the relocation of our headquarters to Ogden, Utah.

Besides the move this would be a good time to give an update on overall company news. Over the past 5 years we have been building out our Utah data center, one of the largest in the state in fact. This location has been mature for a couple years now. We have a 30-year lease directly with the City of Ogden and nearly 120,000 sqft of space with hundreds of gigabits of connectivity from many different providers. We also have direct links back to Equinix LA3 Los Angeles network with only 13-15ms additional latency. We also relocated our corporate offices and management staff to this location. This location has quite a few benefits over the LA location, costs savings due to lower power and cooling cost along with being a great disaster recovery location, and we have full control over the building which allows us to expand in any direction as the market changes.

In closing I wanted to thank each one of you for your business, some of you are approaching 15 years with us! We are only a few months off from the 20-year mark of our founding and it has been an amazing adventure. We are still true to our roots and offer the best bang for buck high-end hardware, so if you want to refresh your server we keep stock on hand for quick access to all newest gen hardware, from NVMe ssd drives, 250gb-16TB SSD’s, 2TB-16TB 7.2k HDDs, Xeon E servers, AMD EPYC, Intel Xeon SP, Petabyte storage clusters, 10/25/100G cluster configs and so on.

If you have any concerns or need some information please email support@webnx.com and our staff will help you directly or pass it on to management for review and follow up. If you wish to upgrade your server to new hardware please email sales@webnx.com

Thank you for taking the time to read this very long announcement,

I'm sure you will make the best decision. Let us know when you decide and approx how many days/weeks? OH will be offline for.

Will the link change? I'd say most of us have the OH website bookmarked and we just click on that to go to the site. Hopefully our quick click bookmark will still be the same?
Thanks again for all you do

My Archived Shed

I'm going to try to get some complete backups in the next week as there is none. I maybe able to get the sheds backed up as well but the hard drive was faulty and I couldn't get it to mount last time. I am not going to spend money on it and I don't have physical access to the hard drive as it is in the USA. If you think I need to care about a backup more you should get in touch, hit me with answers not questions. I should buy a blank drive for a backup so I am not juggling but I have other bills. Remember, be part of the solution not the problem! BOFH
