have you checked that you have the same gap on each lobe ?- if they are even and the contacts are not worn then maybe worth measuring the rubbing block and scribing to mark the position of the baseplate/locking screw..try and put a crinkle washer under the screw...not sure what else could cause the gap to change - unless a crap spring?

I haven't checked. If I set the gap at 21 thou, the dwell meter said 31 degrees there abouts how far would a hj go before the gap would warn down to approx 10 thou?

I had to give up trying to hot up the old holden 6 after I drove mums Avalon.

just thinking of quality issues...if the rubbing block was cheap and crappy you could measure before and after..if it's changed then that will close the points...it should be good for I'd say 20,000Km or more...if the spring is crappy it could possibly lose tension and close the points...this could be the problem if you can determine that the rubbing block has not worn and the base plate has not moved - which could be determined by scribing it's original position to see if it's moved..can't think of anything else - I'd probably suspect the base plate may be moving as a starting point..That's why I'd try a crinkle or spring washer and scribe it..

Walking home from the pub one night and a guy was stopped on the side of the road. Same thing points closed up, reset them at a guess under torch light. He had drove 110 km after buying the second hand car from a big mount gambier car dealer, they hadn't put any gease on the lobes lol

Fit a Bosch HEI Dizzy or even just one of those Accu-Spark type modules to replace the points.

Cheers, Mick.

back in '85 an aboriginal bloke was at a roadhouse in the NT, in a HQ sedan, I noticed he was having trouble starting it. So I went over to him, spoke not a word of English or so it seemed, I saw the points were closed. Grabbed a screwdriver and by my ever faithful and watchful eye adjusted the points to at least get him going. He immediately grabbed the screw driver and closed them again, I opened them etc this went on maybe 8 times or so, then a carload of his mats turned up in a run down Falcon wagon, the spoke in their own lingo for a bit. Then the hQ driver left the car and went off with them?? Next day that same HQ landed in front of my Hilux as it came across the paddocks and hit the windrow which was quite high on the side of the road and landed on 4 wheels in front of me ( I was doing about 100 KPH)and kept going. My thoughts were at least he got it going LOL Moral is there is no helping some people in this world mate.
