Not OH - Port Macquarie

but any views welcomed about what Port Macquarie is like as a place to live? I've never been there, one - of my daughter's is thinking about taking a job there (graduate journalist)..but she has no idea what it would be like..she is more of a city kind of person...is it a good place for educated young people or a retirement village / bogan hunter's paradise? Seeking any objective feedback from people who have actual experience of living in the area - thanks

Our resident David aka (Old is Good) could tell you first hand but I live about 50 mins drive from Port Mac which is the next biggest town north of me .It's like a mini City with a rural/coastal feel if that's what she likes and getting bigger all the time.It has everything she'll need shopping wise my Mrs loves it,I think there is 3 major shopping complexs, heaps of clubs, beaches, waterways and a University.Town Beach and Rockwall is a beautiful place just to cruise. The council has really got it right up there with the foreshores and parks, very nice she'll love it,here's some pics for ya mate https://www.google.c...
She might end up getting a job on our PRIME 7 TV...:)

Port Macquarie would be a great place to live, it has everything she would need. The population is around 30,000+ now, so it isn't a little country town.
We have a lot of younger people and quite a few pensioners. We have a few bogans and druggies, but doesn't everywhere have them now?
There are sporting clubs for just about anything she could want to play.
We have clubs and pubs with bands, a coffee shop or restaurant on every street corner.
Yes, we have everything Al mentioned above. if she wants to do more training, we have Charles Sturt Uni, Newcastle Uni and TAFE. So we have plenty of educated young people.
If she is renting she could expect to pay around $300 for a small flat to $400+ for something bigger.
We have pretty good public transport (buses) and the train is at Wauchope. Port Macquarie has it's own airport.
If she wants somewhere out of town, Lake Cathie or Bonny Hills are 15 minutes away on the coast, or Laurieton and North Haven are only 20 minutes away, all are serviced by buses if she doesn't want to drive.
I don't want to put her off the job, but is it with Fairfax (Port Macquarie News, and the Express). They have vacancies advertised for journalists and advertising sales on a fairly regular basis. It might be worth checking if it is a long term job. Work can be hard to get up here, and a lot of businesses only put people on who qualify for wage support or a traineeship, and for only as long as the job support/traineeship lasts. That said, why not go for it? It would give her experience and a great lifestyle. We also have two high quality monthly magazines and a smaller local paper so there would always be some work around.
I think she would love it once she settled in.
David

Thanks very much for the replies. I will pass on the comments. Yes it is with Fairfax. It's not a traineeship. It's an internal transfer. She already works for Fairfax and produces the Border Chronicle in Bordertown...which is a very small town in SA. She works on her own and finds the isolation very challenging - her boss who works in another town is very understanding so she drives back to Adelaide a lot, she saw this job advertised and it's working in an office with about 4 or 5 people but similar work. She is the artistic type, does community radio, likes to play in bands, photography and the like - not really a sporting type...looks like a great place to me, I'm sure I'd like it there..

If she already works for them she would be fine.
and Port Macquarie would almost be a big city after a small border town.
Al's right, they have a band or two, community radio and the Focus magazine features a photographer every issue.
we also have a few HR that have sneaked in, so dad and mum would fit in too.

ha ha...not sure the HR with it's original unmolested 161 would make it there and back...it runs fine but it's a 52 year old engine that's never had any work...having said that 55mph seems to be a sweet spot..doesn't like her skirt being lifted too high ....The WB Statesman would def be up to the job though (engine and trans been reconditioned)...might bring a touch of Southern class and elegance to the area hey fellas ? :-)

Southern style class lol
But I bet if you All drove up to Cairns NTH QLD, none of them would make it becouse of the heat and humidity, sometimes I wonder how mine does it when I’m home and how they did it when dad drove it around back in the day,
I’ve got the 4 core radiator twin elect fans on a temp control switch, trans cooler and it still gets up there sometime in city traffic
But the looks ya get and thumbs up from all ages,
That’s gold

As for your daughter moveing up that way, I’m sure IF there was a time in need, I’m sure our fellow members in the area would be there to assist
After all we look out for our kids

As I always say
Stay safe all

we get some very hot temps in SA- regularly well into the 40s but low humidity...my experience (several red and blue 308s) in those temps is they have been ok but struggled when stationary and the air conditioner on...generally when air is off they have been fine...long story but one car I had bad overheating under those conditions and I did almost everything possible to solve it...ended up being the viscous fan clutch...it was about $90n and it solve all my problems...so with air cond and so much heat pumping out the condensor they need real good air flow ...I've also noticed that the 308s get lousy oil pressure at idle when hot and a few Kms on the clock..

Good town but getting busier. Traffic is starting to be a problem at certain times of the day. A mate and i were comparing Port with Coffs this morning at the beach and we both agree Port is much nicer. Its a pretty place with lots of nice beachside options as others have said. nearby you have Bonny Hills and Lake Cathie. I had a mate move there last year from the Central Coast, very happy, no regrets. I have another moving to Bonny Hills in January. Very happy also to be leaving the stupidly busy Central Coast.
I think you will find most people friendly, welcoming and approachable.
There is a car club or two there as well. Hastings Valley auto restorers club is one I know of. Don;t know much about it though. I live about an hour north of there. Opposite direction from Surfwagon Al in Forster

Yes, we have Hastings Auto Restorers. We also have two other old car clubs that both formed from people who got sick of the clickiness and BS in Hastings Auto Restorers. Most of the people in the club are good and I see them regularly, but it seems to have large proportion of not so good ones. It was the worst I've seen in a car club, that's why I left.
Then there are all the other Ford, Holden and other speciaised clubs.
I go up Coffs a fair but to see Nathan. The Jetty area is great, but Port beats it every other way.
Sit on the Port Macquarie Town Green by the river, just as it is getting dark on a summer evening and you will wonder if there is anywhere better in Australia.
