HQ Sandman Non existent

It’s funny there actually is no such thing as a HQ Sandman, thats coming from parts interpreters and Smash Repairers who were into those sorts of cars and working on them when they were new and to prove show us a GM Parts Manual or Production Index book which shows part descriptions and part numbers for These Supposed Sandmans and it is illegal for a company to produce cars without parts backups to suit and parts numbers, the GM production index book shows that the sandman did not start until the HJ. And as a matter of fact they didnt come out at the start of HJ it was 2 months into the run before they came out. I have also asked quiet a number of tradesmen who were around in that time and were into panelvans and they have every time confirmed my statement. There is no one in general motors now who would know any different about these. I myself have genuine GM Index Production Books and Parts Number Books From that time to prove it.Do not confuse a GTS panelvan with a Sandman. A myth has become a legend.

How old are you?
Like me, many of us were around back then and can clearly remember either seeing, owning or driving the HQ Sandman.
My father in law owned an XY Fairmont wagon which he bought new that a had a 302 WINDSOR in it. Yes, the engine number matched the chassis number, so it was original. I wish I had $100 for every Ford expert who told me that car was never built by Ford.
Many beliefs have been born of ignorance over the years.

Old is good.

You should try owning an ex factory prototype 1989 NB Fairlane like I have. Compliance plate and all licensing records say NB but officially there was no such model. Service books is stamped with Ford new products engineering and it has 4 speed auto fitted although it was made 6 months before the 4 speed was released. When I wrote to DOTAG they told me the car is technically illegal as the compliance tag was only approved for a prototype and, as Ford confirmed, the vehicle was meant to be crushed not sold. Every part of the car including the plastic centre caps has MV-1 marked on it in beige paint. When I tried to buy a workshop manual from the dealer just after I bought it (from John Hughes and advertised as an NB) they also said there was no such model and I should contact Ford. Ford initially told me they had no record of it in their computer system but eventually said that was because as a prototype it had not been built on the assembly line and entered into the system. Mostly its a mix of NA and NC parts but has a unique chromed version of the NA grill and a few other odd parts. Titan Ford, where I used to buy parts, also found that there were a few annotations for the NB on Ford's online parts catalogue. I have subsequently discovered it is the only NB compliance plated NB on the road.

There is only one part that is unique to a HQ Sandman, all other parts are straight from other vehicles, like GTS guards, steering wheel etc. But the horn button emblem that reads SANDMAN was unique to the HQ, as HJ to HZ have no badge in the centre of the horn button as it moved to the glove bax, and its part number is 9931488.

The end.

So, applying your logic, there was never a HQ SS?
Only the stripes were unique to the SS. It was the proverbial parts bin special based on the Belmont. Does that make it a Belmont or an SS?

Holden did all sorts of things to get sales, at the end of the day if marketing named it something and it became known as that then that's what it is..Sandmans in particular being based on commercial vehicles can be difficult to authenticate, often you can exclude a car from being a Sandman (eg for the later ones if seating capacity is 3 it can't be one) but you can't necessarily prove that it is one. The real fool proof way is to have the original sales invoice with unique vehicle numbers eg VIN,engine..it's how most things are authenticated by actual original records. I've always owned Statesmans and its interesting that they were never Holdens...even the rego certificate has the make as Statesman and not Holden..it was their crazy way to try and sell the car as being more exclusive..the word Holden isn't anywhere on the car or owners manual etc...

read Shakespeare...

here is a part extract with the Holden designer at the time...marketing advertised it as a Sandman and people bought it as one...who gives a rats that the parts book didn't keep pace...I bet if you bought one at the time the invoice would have stated Sandman..

".....At the same time Holden’s design department, led by Leo Pruneau, had watched the increasing trend of customised panel van interiors and wild exterior paint jobs. You and I know them as "shaggin waggins"

Leo tells the story: "During the HQ model run I asked Peter Arcadipane to do some decals for us and some long side stripes. We put Monaro front guards on a Belmont panel van, blacked out the headlight surrounds, added a Monaro GTS steering wheel and stood back as they flew out of the dealerships."

Based on that experience, Leo and his team picked the brains of some van customisers. "We found they wanted a van with a Monaro GTS sports interior with bucket seats, a wide choice of engines and transmissions and a bare bones panel van section out the back. That was because everyone wanted to customise the back themselves, with stereos, carpet, mirrors and a mattress. So that was what we did with the HJ onwards" remembers Leo.

"We also put a huge Sandman decal across the tailgate. In fact, when we showed it to the directors they just looked and shook their heads and asked if we were really serious," says Leo. "You bet we are" he told them.

Leo also wanted to have a mattress as an official Holden option. The then CEO said NO to that idea. But Leo did get a tent to cover the rear tailgate on the options list.

Yes, but not so sure internet ones.... "parts interpreters and Smash Repairers". This is accelerated learning for a younger restorer and she/he will spend wiser next time, maybe.

Yes, that was because the Australian Design Rules, or ADR's, changed. It meant from 1973 all front indicators must be amber. So parking lights being white had to be moved to the headlight.
