In 1973, I bought at a repossession auction, a 12 month old HQ Premier 253 auto sedan, missing the compliance plate.

20 years later in 1993, I bought a HX Ute 308 manual, which, on closer examination, had a panel van compliance plate.

Welcome to the world of old holden.

around the time you bought the ute a lot of blokes up this way in SE Qld were buying vans and converting them to utes as the vans were usually cleaner/tidier in the cargo area than utes. Big ask I know but a few I know were converted and still had to have the van tags in place as they were still a 'van'.

Someone most likely rebirthed the van with a compliance plate from a different car they legally obtained.
It happens sometimes.
I personally know of an LJ XU1 replica that started it's second life as a LJ GTR shell with no tags, that the buyer was reasonably sure was stolen. Then, half way through the restoration, I thought it was strange when he drove 400km each way to get a rusted out LJ parts car. It is now on the road with with a compliance plate, tags and chassis number from a four door LJ SL Torana. The bloke once said he was thinking of getting me to sell it for him. I made it quite clear that I didn't want anything to do with it.

Old is good.

I was doing a bit of casual work in around ‘84,’85. One of the blokes I was working with bragged how his two door LC had a stolen LJ XU1 motor in it. I asked wasn’t he afraid of being caught with it. His reply was “his mate did his pink slips, and the coppers don’t check engine numbers if he got pulled over ”. Also said it would only be a problem if he ever sold it, but said that was unlikely.

what about the other plates - are they also Statesman - like that would be have been a 308 trimatic with a 2.6:1 diff G70...whereas I doubt a Van would have ever been fitted with a 2.6 diff..it doesn't have a Statesman front on it does it? ps the panel van should be 8WM70 on the compliance plate whereas Statesman will have 8WS19 or 8WT19 for DeVille and Caprice respectively

Andrew

Looks like someone has cut the front off a statesman to fix a rusted out van and forgotten to change the plate over.
