HQ El Camino

Image:

Hi all I have been asked to see if anyone as any info or any pictures of these cars.
This is what I have been told about them.
There were 8 El Caminos made not sure on colours this one is an early 1972 lime green metallic with black trim with black and white flax rado on seats and a GTS dash.
They had no GTS steering wheel as that was not an option.
The GMH dealership Neil Neilson motors Burwood Hwy Ferntree Gully painted stripes on them and fitted badges off a 68-69 El Camino ute & sold them as an El Camino GT saloons.
The dealer didn't get authority from GMH and was told if he sold any more he would loose his dealership.
This car was made on 4/1972 and wasn't registered until the 3/1973.
About a year difference because the dealer had to wait until the 4 door monaro was bought out before he could sell this car.
There are more pictures [http://gallery.oldho...|Here] of this one and a advert for them as well.
If you have any information or pictures contact me at HQSS@oldholden.com
Cheers Paul.

Thats pretty cool. Do you have any more photos of the car? I'd love to see more.

hi Rds the elcamino is to the ss what the ss was to the gts
but without gmh authority (not quite gmh) refer to newspaper addvert in pauls shed.it was marketed by neil neilson motors a gmh dealer as a sporty hq 4 door to compete with the oppositions ford gt at the time with a cheaper price tag.i rang the retired neil neilson approx.at his home 10 years ago & he told me he had a lot of orders for elcaminos before gmh found out about his elcaminos specials.ive been told that mine was the last one sold.if there is anyone who knows more about this rare vehicle or knows the value of it or knows someone with one please email to me at signss@bigpond.net.au
i was told there was an el camino at monaros in millenium at wangarrata in 2000 if anyone can has pictures of that car or saw that car please let me know.

I had never heard of them before either until the owner who is a SS group member told me about it.
There are a few other pictures of it but they are with weld wheels and GTS mirrors on it which are not true to original so the owner would rather not show them and confuse the true look of the car.
The original owner has some photos of it and they are going to be scanned when they can be, so I will add them when I get them.
Rds what you said about this and the SS's and then the GTS's is about right and it sounds like Holden got a bit upset because the dealer came out with them first.
I have been told and shown in some other pictures that the paint outs are copied off a 1969 ranchero gt but they seem to sit well on the HQ body shape.
Cheers Paul.

Hi im the owner of the elcamino.i have tracked down 2 other
elcaminos owners one of them was the same green as mine but didnt have the same striping it had the black outs at the bottom of the car like the gts & also had 2 inches of black around the wheel arches similair to the ford xa-xb gt.the car ended up in goondiwindi qld. the guy bought it off his second cousin in melbourne in 1981 he sold it for $2800 in 1984 the car ended up getting painted white & eventually scrapped & went to the crusher.the other elcamino was owned buy a buy in melbourne it was the same colour scheme as mine & he eventually painted it tangarine & ended up getting scrapped also due to a rusted out floor.the owner said he saw a purple elcamino with white stripes in mt.waverly in melbourne not to long ago.
just a bit trivia for all you holden fans interested in
this rare car.

im the owner of this hq elcamino,& due to a write up in the march issue of just cars magazine ive tracked down the rest of the elcaminos except one, that is probably the purple with white stripes wich was seen in melbourne,2 purple ones were written off in the early 80's & 2 green ones were wrecked for parts years ago. the dealer who sold them neil neilsen rang me after seeing the advert & said there was 6 sold not 8 ,3 lime green metalic & 3 chateau mauve metalic,he told me there was 14 more he was going to stripe up & sell as elcaminos but had to sell them as kingswoods after gmh caught him out.he said the yanks were more anoyed with him from steeling there banding from there gm elcamino utes.so i have one of two in existance.
so if anyone has seen the purple elcamino getting around melbourne or knows who has it please let me know.

im the owner of the hq elcamino & thanks to a write up in march issue of just cars magazine iv tracked down all of the elcaminos except one, that probably the purple one with white stripes wich was seen driving in melboure by a guy who used to own a green one.2 green ones have been wrecked for parts & 2 purple ones were written off in the early 80,s.the gmh dealer neil neilsen who is now 85 & long retired rang me after seeing the advert in just cars & told there was 6 sold not 8 ,3 lime green metallic & 3 chateau mauve metallic, there were 14 others he had ready to stripe up & badge as elcaminos but where sold off as other specials not elcaminos after he was caught out by gmh.he told me the yanks were more anoyed because he stole there branding from the gm elcamino ute.so i have 1 of 2 in existance & if any one has seen the purple one getting around melbourne or knows who owns it please let me know.

Pat Mulligan was the the ace salesman at Neilson's Motors. Unfortunately Pat Mulligan past away last week and Pat remembered their being more than eight. Also Peter Backman who was detailing the Cars at Neilson's at the time remembers more than 8 as well, as they were trying to play down the numbers to ease the pain from GM and GMH.

Peter remembers a Purple with Stripes over the bonnet, roof and boot as well. Is Neil Neilson still alive?

Thanks Steve

Hi Steve,
My name is Rob I am one of Neil's grandchildren, I can confirm Neil is still alive although struggling with dementia for the last 12 months. From what he has always told me there are not many el Caminos that actually made it off the showroom floor. So 6 or 8 sounds about right. He ended up in ALOT of trouble from GM and threats of law suits and dealership loss etc so had to scrap the idea. I think I actually have a letter from GM stating everything. I will have a look through all the paperwork I have. If anyone knows of any ex Neil Neilson sold Holdens that are up for sale please let me know as I am keen to get a hold of one.

Rob
