You are correct, the first Holden was a 48-215 and the second was a 50-2106 (IIRC).

However, with the release of the FJ, it was easier to call the first cars FX as it is shorter than saying 48-215.

By common usage, the first 2 models have been known as FX for about 3 decades. They have only started to be called 48-215 and 50-2106 again in recent years.

Saw in a book somewhere...

A short while into the 48-215 model run, a problem was discovered with the front crossmember. The design was updated, and the updated drawings sent out to the assembly lines were marked... FX... Short for Front Crossmember...

From there the name sorta stuck.

Victa.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness".

Another version i heard is that some Sydney caryard thought the
48-215 designation wasn't good enough and gave it the unofficial 'FX' designation...
And from there it just grew in popularity and stuck.

Never Drive A Car Younger Than Yourself!

Hello All
48/215 is the model number for the Sedan (1948 >)

Coupe Utility = 50/2106 (1951 >)
Buisiness Sedan = 48/217 (1953 >)

Anyone know much about the "business sedans". I know they were for fleet cars and taxis. What made them differrent from the standard sedans ??

Cheers

Hi Guys.

There is no 48-217, the 48 (or FX) business sedan is a 48-215 with option number 257. The FJ-217 was the 1st time the business sedan had a seperate model code number.

I started my apprenticeship in 1963 at Hillsdons for Holdens never heard the term FX till around 1969? I was told it came from a GMH spare parts man who started writing FX on early model part box's instead of putting 48-215 I later saw it on a Gregories manual.

1948 48 2 1 5

Way back in 1948,
a car rolled off the line.
The day Australia waited for,
November 29.

Ben Chifley was Prime Minister,
the Leader of the day.
He ushered in what soon became
an icon here to stay.

It gained a reputation
being rugged on the land.
But Holden couldn’t build enough
to satisfy demand.

People bought them 'Sight Unseen',
from any Dealer who.
Would let them be the leader of,
that quickly growing queue.

And then in 1951,
a coupe ute was released.
It soon became the 'Tradesman’s Choice',
the others were 'Deceased'.

1953 was when
the 'Air-ride' came along.
Though still a '48 2 1 5'
it sang an 'FJ' song.

It came with telescopic shocks
and wider rear springs too.
For as the name implies my friend,
'They Rode the Air with You'.

Now some say: "FX Holden"
and some say: "Saints Alive”.
But a 'Rose will always be a Rose'
like '48 2 1 5'!!
