Mechanics Panel Beaters and other Auto trades

I'm asking nothing new my oldman used to ask the same question 30 years ago as My real job is Electrician no body has a problem with electricians being licenced recently I've been hanging around my friends workshop.Mechanic's could kill far more people a day if the do bad work. I'm just curious as why in this who can we sue world?

Comments

Actually, there are people that object to electrical work being restricted to licensed electricians noting that in the UK and the US and New Zealand the rules are different and some DIY is allowed see https://worksafe.gov... and http://www.oriongrou... and and https://en.wikipedia... etc. Silicon Chip Magazine has debated the issue from time to time and noted that a) most mortal electrocutions in Australia involve licensed electricians or their apprentices and b) that the same applies in those countries where it is deregulated and there is an argument that the pros are more at risk of complacency or repeated routines where they think they have isolated a circuit and haven't, while the amateurs tend to more careful and risk adverse. My view is that like in some other parts of the world, there should be a redistricted DIY licences with a night school course and a limit on can be done by the DIYers; it would be better than what happens now with some DIYers doing illegal work without the required knowledge. And yes the automotive repair industry keeps arguing no DYI should be allowed but again many of the fatal mistakes are made by the pros with the same issues of complacency and repeated routines.

PS and from my own experience when I checked the power outlets on my then 1980 newly built home with one of those 3 light plug in tester I found that exactly half were not earthed; the electrician had not taken any insulation off the earth wires and apparently assumed tightening terminal screw would piece the insulation but in half of the power points it had not. And the last electrician I had in to give me RCDs and a couple of 15 amp power points left the meter box panel unscrewed (in fairness his missus rang a few days later asking me to check as he couldn't remember doing it). And as I discovered recently the electrician who wired up my evap air did not us IP rated junction boxes or switches screwed onto the fan scroll in a wet area; he just filled standard ones with silastic. And yes I can tell you similar stories about mechanics. A panel beater who replaced a tie rod fastener with cast bolts that broke on the first pot hole so I had no steering, a brake shop who put three piston cups in the EH's wheels cylinders etc etc.

FFS are you asking a question ??
If so, what is the question ??
You say you are an electrician !! which to me means you should have at the least, half a brain, but maybe not.
So I repeat, what is the question ??

Now to aussie blue
You say every one should be able to carry out electrical work meaning 240 volt, the stuff that kills.
Again FFS, of course electricians will have the most electrocutions because they do the most work with electrical wiring/installs, same a plumbers will have the most [Naughty Pottyword]e under their fingernails cause they spend the most time up to their armpits in [Naughty Pottyword]e..

So what is the point here people ??

But shonky amateur mechanics seem more common; the worst I have seen is bits of wood to replace disk brake pad in a second-hand car a friend bought.

"You say every one should be able to carry out electrical work meaning 240 volt, the stuff that kills." I actually did not say that. I said " My view is that like in some other parts of the world, there should be a redistricted DIY licences with a night school course and a limit on what can be done by the DIYers; it would be better than what happens now with some DIYers doing illegal work without the required knowledge."

And on "Again FFS, of course electricians will have the most electrocutions because they do the most work with electrical wiring/installs," The point Silicon Chip Magazine made was that in countries where home owners can do there own electrical work with a training and a limited certificate there were virtually no known fatal electrocutions resulting from this work. In essence the magazine made the persuasive that there was no evidence of reduced mortalities or electrocutions by restricting home electrical work to licensed electricians compared to home DIYers who had limited but appropriate short term training.

You do need a license to set up and operate a motor vehicle repair business. In doing so you need to be able to verify that you are employing suitably certified people and or supervising those that are not. The requirements are covered under Australian Consumer Law, protecting the rights of consumers. So any customer just needs to do business with a licensed business. It's different though to those trades that require a license such as plumbers/gas fitters and electricians that have a legal obligation to comply with codes and standards covered under various acts of law.

In QLD you can get a restricted electrical license. Most plumbers have them to change hot water systems and that's all you need to do test and tags. Have a look into it Aussie blue, you may find computer repair shops might need someone with a competency to oversee the repairs being done. As an electrical inspector I have seen my fair share of shonky's out there.

They are also available in WA per https://www.commerce... but you need to be working for a business and be trained by a licensed electrician. I really don't mind employing a electrician as needed an I have friend a relatives that will do it in exchange for me doing their tax returns etc. I think the guy who replaced the electric motor in my evap air conditioner some 20 years ago had one of these restricted licences and I had to tell him how to correctly use a clamp on AC ammeter to adjust the pulley diameter as I caught him with the clamp jaws on the wire rather than around it. In fairness it was a New Year's day emergency job and his supervisor that usually did this bit wasn't available. Perhaps he was still in training but the company sent him out anyway. As he admitted, he usually just lugged the heavy motors up the ladder, bolted in in, connected the wiring and his supervisor checked it and adjusted the pulley and belt tension. I note the industry is also pushing for legislative changes that would prevent Altroncs, Jaycar and Bunnings etc from selling mains items like power points, light switched and light fittings to anyone but licensed electricians; along the lines of the restriction on selling air con gas. Per https://www.commerce... " The holder of a restricted Electrical Worker's Licence is not permitted to carry out the installation or alterations to fixed wiring or to repair or replace items such as power points, lighting fittings etc."

In QLD anyone can have a restricted or full ticket but to do any work by yourself you need a contractors license that is a 12 month course to obtain and you need to earn a certain amount per year to keep it. If you have a contractors license you can employ ticketed tradespeople to do the work on your behalf. I would not be employing anyone without a license to do anything. Even as a home owner, if they don't have the qualification to do a specific task they don't get the job.

Back int he 90s the ECA had a bit of pull with the QLD licensing board and it was the ECA that came up with the business course to get your contractor's as well.

Some states are easier than others. Would be great to have one set of rules Australia wide.

He always said, 240 will give you curly hair so don’t touch it. Better to be safe than sorry

No that's not my comeback it just part of my ongoing campaign to stop the hurtful use of the R world as I have a learning disabled son and I know how much the use of this word hurts him (to the point of contemplating suicide); it essentially correlates mental disability with being a bad person.

And hey I am both a retired FCPA accountant and a retired Economist with post grad UWA degrees but it seems every man and his dog fancies themselves as an economist and knows how the world's/Australia's economy etc should be fixed. On top of that most of the politicians think they are expert economists but clearly keep stuffing it up. But I don't get upset about that or get profession protective. Similarly, while I am an FCPA I know some very good bookkeepers that have no qualifications.

Licence trades are to protect the customer not the person dong the work.

Some states have licenced motor mechanics and others do not. Some have some very strict rules whilst others you can drive a truck through them.

DIY is one thing, and around motor cars many here would be quite competent to do odd jobs on their cars, even rebuild many parts. I am an electrician and have rebuilt 10 engines, two gearboxes, dismantled and reassembled several FE to VZ Holdens but would not make a mechanics arsehole.

But if I want, in QLD, I can set up a mechanic shop tomorrow and start working on other peoples cars. (I know a fellow who did this, ran quite a successful mechanic shop for a number of years, no qualifications)

Seen it happen in other non licenced industries. You either like or do not, but next time you get someone to do a job for you, ask yourself "how do I know this guy/girl knows what they are doing?"

Just look at all the balcomies that have fallen over because of shonky workmanship, that does not meet regs.
