Fitting B&M Megashifter to Trimatic

Model:

Just wanted to share my recent experience of fitting a Megashifter to a Trimatic in bro law's HZ. Finally got it working after hours of stuffing around trying to use the brackets out of the packet.
The picture is not ours, just a sample off the web that makes it clearer. Thanks, and apologies to any copyright holders there.

It should have been a case of buying the Trimatic brackets and bolting them up. I think I took longer fiddling with the brackets and the cable adjustment than to fit the 308 and trans!

If it was my car I would have modified them straight away but I didnt want to waste someone else's cash if I stuffed it up. Eventually found out through the EH club (thanks Ray) that the brackets need to be modified to fit. Read on...

I ended up drilling the rear hole of the cable bracket into a slot where it bolts onto the pan so the bracket could sit further back on the trans with the cable adjustment in the middle. The front hole came slotted already. With bro law running the shifter from 1st right through to Park, I shifted the Z bracket on the trans to see if the cable trunion would line up with the middle hole for each gear. It lined up in 1st, it was a bit out on 2nd, more out on 3rd etc until I got to Park where it just ran out of adjustment. I reckoned the hole was in the right place on the Z, it just needed to be lower to get the fulcrum thing happening so that it was compatible at both the shifter and the selector on the trans. Not enough room to drill another hole lower, but I could rebend the Z. In our case the middle (horizontal)part of the Z was too wide also, which made the cable move too far out to the side of the car so that the metal rod of the cable wasn't straight as it came out. I took the selector bracket off and flattened the bottom bend of the Z and rebent it so that it was longer and the middle bit shorter. This made the hole sit lower. There was a line already scribed on the bracket at the same place that I needed to bend it. Coincidence?
Hooked it all up, adjusted the cable and ran through the gears - Hey Presto! Spot on! Took about 30mins to do the modifications and set it all up.
Went for a drive and it all works great. A happy conclusion to a frustrating time. Hope my ramblings can help anyone in the same situation. I'm not sure if others have had the same experience with these brackets but it seems that if you buy a bracket set to fit a B&M shifter to a Trimatic, be prepared to modify them to suit. The brackets are not made by B&M, I imagine they're designed locally?
The next thing will be to see if the cable support bracket slips from its place on the trans pan now that it has slots in both mounting bolt holes. If so I may need to weld on a strip of thin steel and redrill the holes in the right places.
Phew, I'm glad that's sorted (for now)!

Did you buy the trimatic bracket?

I had a B&M quicksilver shifter which is also a cable shifter. It comes with a bunch of brakets but you have to buy one specially for trimatics.

Yes, bro law purchased this Trimatic bracket set from this mob. We used a WB Statesman engine and trans so we ordered a LHS shifter set.

http://cgi.ebay.com....

I tried for hrs to make it fit in case I was just missing the obvious. Even went down to the speed shop on OG Road to compare the ones they had, which looked the same. Had me absolutely stumped trying to get the suckers to work out of the packet. Are you saying you've been able to do that? Maybe we scored a bung set?

You lucky duck! I sure did wish we had a Turbo box at times during this palaver as all the brackets for US trannies came with the shifter and looked pretty good (and had instructions!)And yes, I tried them all, even the Chrysler ones!

Good to hear it worked for you Holden Fan. A year later and the shifter is still working well for us. I recently welded a washer to where I slotted the hole on the mount bracket so that it doesnt slip on the trans pan. Hope you can get 1st sorted, its pretty important that all gears are selecting as it can ruin the trans if the adjustment is out. Definitely a two person job!

No pictures sorry, don't even think I had a smart phone back then!
But look at the picture at the top of the thread. The gold bracket has to have the lower bend straightened out and then re-bent so that the horizontal part is smaller/ shorter.
Mine had a line scribed on it so I used that as a guide when bending and it worked, still does to this day.
I recall that the hole for the cable had to drop down about an inch.
