Hq - wb engine conversion red 6 to 308

Hey guys
really sorry if this question comes up none stop but I'm having trouble finding some information for my curiosity , I know when changing the motors you gota upgrade brakes and springs and box and all that type of stuff but I'm wondering how the motor actually fits in, I'm curious if the old mount for the 6 will hold the 8 or do you have to cut out the old 6 mounts and weld new v8 mounts in , or if their is anyothet way it fits in,
any info apreciated thanks guys

So long as you have HQ - WB engine plates for the V8, yes...

I did a 202 to 253 conversion in a HQ once. All the V8 bits bolted straight in.
I left the original 202 brakes and suspension in the car and never had any trouble.

did you also put in the power steering for the 253? and what else did you find you had to replace ? what box did you use?

Accelerator cable. Get a V8 one. If you had power steering on your 202 then you will need a V8 bracket to refit the pump to the engine. You will also need the approp pulley to bolt onto your harmonic balancer.

I used standard springs too. If you are going to upgrade your springs, dont do the same as I did and try and salvage them from a statesman, or you will never get the bloody things in.

Oh, its probably a good idea to upgrade your radiator as well. And if you have a tri-matic and plan on keeping it, you will need a bell housing and torque converter from an 8.

Paul.

Hi All

I done this conversion is 1/2 day at xmas

Out came the 202-trimatic and in went the 253 trimatic

both boxes are right hand selector and i kept the column change ( granny shift or retro shift according to my kids )

Radiator needs changing as the outlets are on opposite side - a good time to get a new 3 core unless you have a guaranteed known worker that came with the engine or another trusted source ( note 202 and chev are the same outlet positions and with a 202 you can use a 253-308 radiator the thermostat cap you can spin 180 degrees and use the V8 you hose the bottom hose is a fiddle but there is a stock hose you can use maybe a EA falcon or VL cant remember)

Wiring hardness needs some minor mods to lengthen some wire - water temp and oil switch ( dizzy and starter will be ok )

Exhaust - has to be V8 at the engine once you co past the transmision crosmember do what you like

You could use your trimatic 6 if you want to , but you must change the bell housing and torque convertor and also the dipstick

I kept the HQ 6 salsbury diff , the 6 tailshaft fits still perfectly - lengh is not a issue and the V8 trimatic yoke is the same as the 6 ( i will change to a 10 bolt soon, i got a diff now but need a tailshaft ) transmision croamember is the same all trimatic and all M20-21-22 use the same one

you need a V8 accelerator cable @ $40 new at american autos but i am told find a good used one for $10-$20 as the new ones are asian made ( i got told this after i bought a new one )

for the small $$$ buy new engine and tranny mount but the 253/308 HQ mounts slip right on the same place on the engine crosmember that the 202 mounts to

front spring - well mine had some as new yellow ones in it and the wheel arch is just above the tyre so its not to low or to high

if you got a commodore engine you need to change sump , oil pick up , engnine mounts, water pump and then use the HQ accesories eg alternator and power steer
regards

oh yeah the V8 high pressure hose is much longer than the 6 cylinder one ( new @ 480 ( or take your old one to enzed or pirtec and tell them the new measurement for 1/2 the price )

regards
george

I see that this was posted over 8 years ago but hoping someone can give me some valuable info. Im wanting to do the same thing to my HJ kingswood. Currently has 202 red 3 speed manual on the tree, banjo diff. Have got the option to purchase a 308 red, trimatic auto to salisbury 10 bolt diff. Would like to keep the column change if possible but not sure if it would work going from being manual to an auto? Thanks in advance if anyone reads this.

Gm1961, if you dont mind me asking, what did all that cost you, in parts anyway as it sounds like you did a lot of work yourself.

And by parts I mean everything BUT the engine.

Long time looker, first time owner.

I used the V8 radiator, no power steering. I had a 253, 3 speed sedan parts car and used what I needed.
I put a steel case Celica five speed behind the 253. It went for the 10 years I owned it without any trouble.

Hi All

money - yeahs thats a 4 letter word

radiator - was a 3 core 6 the swap outlets and clean out with rods was @ $120 - i R&R myself

they stuffed the radiator up by turning the trans outlets inside out and sealing - somehow they thought i told them it was going to be a manual - remote 10inch trans cooler was $140 , but the radiator shop gave me back 1/2 and also gave me the hoses and clips etc ( after that i hear stories of old tanks leaking water into the trans coolant passage - never seen it myself )

wiring was nothing has wires and a box of connectors from supercheap $5 tops

radiator hoses @ $15 each

exhaust - i got lucky here - complete system engine pipe - muffler tailpipe all 1 x 21/4 inch $20 ebay - was just lucky as seller just went extractors and 2 x 2 1/2's - he kept the old stuff but the garage is getting cluttered - but the engine i bought had a hairline crack in the right hand side exhaust manifold, i place on ebay $30 and missed out, then on saty paid $50 for 1 right side one i needed , put it on, then next day got a 2nd chance offer for $20 - there opening bid - so i bought both, i sent them 2 x post prepaid express bags (from work :)), they kept them and posted up in a small box filled with paper scrap - really happy - i now have more spares

new accelerator cable $40-45 american autos

new water pump $65 repco - ask them for the good one the impellor is much better than the cheaper one

new engine and trans mount $70 of ebay as a set

alternator was a bit sad , but bought a cheap replacement (ingram 35amp )$25 untill i get the bosch rebuilt and set to 55-70 amps ( the ingram is a stock 35amps and works well gives 14.4v at the battery on start up

tailshaft and diff is still the 202 (trans mount is the same trimatic 6 or 8 ) - to get a V8 tailshaft would cost @$40 ( if unis are shagged add another $70 ) 10 bolt diff is anywhere form $50 to $200 for a good single spinner, to $200-$1000 for a good LSD , unless you want to go racing you dont need LSD plus they are a bit scary on wet roads - get a quiet nice open wheeler 3.08 ratio is nice , if you want a bit faster 335 or 355 anything higher and the engine revs to hard with a 3 speed auto

I bought a "complete" power steer usually $350 at ebay but each part you dont get cost money

$20 proper bolts - any others snap even grade 8's
$50 duall or tripple pulley must be HQ-WB not commodore
$50 used or $80 new fan shroud
$35 new 7 blade fixed fan it looks like ninja stars :)
$80 power steer drag link - diferent to no power steer
$50 flexi steering column mount - again diferent power steer
?? not sure of the intermediat shaft is same of diferent to non power
$80 high pressure main power steer hose
$2 lower pressure return hose - same as fuel line ( on that i recomend you install new fuel hose from chassis rail to fuel pump, then place on inner guard a bracket and run a fuel filter straight on the bottom but 90 deg on top that way you can send the hose over the rockers and to the carby - this will move / be away from exhaust and minimise fuel heat soak

$120 front springs - king springs V8 stock or V8 less 2 inches places guard still above the tyre - mine were ok there is no sign of sag and it does not bottom out - shocks appear good ( and you front and rear shocks, front coils, and aftermarket front and rear sway bars are on the car - some one done a upgrade before me )

From a HQ i converted before i had to chase many parts as i used a commodore engine

$50 timing case ( was HG of all things )
$150 HQ oil pick up and HQ sump
$45 complete alternator bracket with bolts
$15 full set water pump bolts as it was missing
$25 egr style rockers
$110 i bought a full gasket kit got left with head gaskets and valley gaskets - got to use them a few years later

IF you are doing a HQ you need a V8 accelerator rod linkage - the 6 and 8 are different but you should mod the accelerator and use a HJ onward cable - you cant just conenct a HJ to HQ as the pedal is diferent as is the cut out on the firewall - but what you can do is get a used VB-C-H commodore or HJ onwards cable, go to the firewall where the HQ pedal is exposed and clips on to the metal rod, now take the rod off, and make up a bracket / sleeve and mount the cable there - secure cable to hole where rod use to go in - to secure cable to firewall you can by a clip - i bend up from a 240V protective slip that goes on the plastic conduit and wraped that around the cable and drilled 1 whole and secured with small nut and bolt.you can also run a small spring as a secondary return there, all you need is bracket of the inlet manifold to support the front of the accelerator cable - buy new or plenty at wreckers all HJ onwards 8's not sure about 6's good chance they fit with bend and drill 1 hole

As you can see all those things add up to more than a 253-trimatic
You are better paying more and having the complete car next to your and do the swap over - or if buying at the wreckers - ask them to hold the car in seperate area before every one picks at things and ensure you get everything - 3 times in the last 5 years i have done this and always run around chasing parts and finding out they are wrong or dont exist or worst - wait till next weekend and try again as the wife does not like running around fetching old parts for a old car - spray can and high pressure power steer hose is her limit

regards
george
