LPG solenoid misbehaving...!

Model:
Engine:
Section:
Image:

Turned on ignition this afternoon, but this time the solenoid that clicks off the supply (until engine starts) did NOT work. Gas kept flowing and engine wouldn't start!

Any quick fix-it tips fellas?

(The disconnected wire has always been like that. Odd, I know.)

HKing of no-go.

That solenoid is controlled by the "relay" that usually has a red light in the top of it. It looks like the black one at the top. When you first turn the ignition "on", it will open for a few seconds, and if it gets no ignition pulse (from the distributor), it shuts off again.
It sounds like that is crook. Try disconnecting the wire that goes to the solenoid (with the ignition "on"), if the solenoid shuts, the "relay" is crook. If the gas keeps flowing, you have a stuck or dirty seat in your solenoid. Good Luck!

"If your car has quarter vents, a diff at the back, and was available with wind-down windows, you may talk to me.
Otherwise I am not interested. Amen."

Many thanks for that advice. I now understand that system a little better.
I disconnected and reconnected wires to 2 fittings.
One is the metal unit that has the gas line enter and exit. It's mounted on the inner guard.

The second is the small black plastic unit that screws into the top of the convertor itself. In the pic is is just behing the thick gas line exiting the convertor.
I also unscrewed a little and retightened it.

Voila!
One of those actions has got it functioning correctly again.
Phew! Time and $$ saved for what seems to be minor issue.

Thanks again!

HK-ing again.

'i'm definately shore that guage wont work with my tuff bango diff and Opal sydcrome box,if it goes though my grill, and I put the breaks on I realize its better with the glimer belt & tunned holly and Ederbrock duel feul webber gaurds, wiht etc primmer.'

Are for building colourbond fences. There is NO place for them anywhere on any car. (sorry one of my pet hates!)

If you replace the ground wire from the grey relay so that it terminates at the battery, and not through a stinkin tek screw, it will serve you much better. There's a very good chance that will let you down the way it is.

Didn't fit it up myself, but I take your point Shane.
I actually tried to tighten it this morning and found it stripping, so there's some immediate proof.

My problem now is that the solenoid works, but the motor won't start. Turns over but no ignition.
This is immensely frustrating as it stranded me twice back in the Summer and cost nearly $500 in call-outs to get it fixed.
First 'fix' lasted about 2wks.... Grr!!
Second has got me about 8 months.

Now I'm stuck and don't have the spare quid to pay for another 'fix'. Trains and bike can only get me so far.

HKing - sighing....

Have you tried to hotwire it?

If it fails to start then, the next obvious place will be the module. I have a spare you can try if you need it. If you wish to try that, I can get it in the post today.

I guess it is easy, but I've never actually tried to hotwire this or any car.

Any tips, so I can try t'row?

Normally, I'd be checking here a few times a day (and could have replied long before the post closed). Fine day for me to go in to work for the whole day - without checking OldHold. D'oh!

HKing - bright spark.

Run a wire from battrey + to coil +.

This will bypass the ignition. Turn the key as normal.

If it starts, you will need to disconnect this wire to stop it.

If it doesn't start, sing out and I'll post down that module.

Hey there Shane.
Have you changed your mobile # ?
Just tried to text, but got failed message.

Some success here.
I just tried again and it did EVENTUALLY start. When I bumped the relay (black box with small green light on top) it staggered, so that could be the problem I guess.

I also earthed the other relay thing (grey box) direct to the battery negative. It had rust under mounting point, so maybe that was problem too (?)

So I don't get my terminology wrong, can a relay be a module?
Is the small black relay thing what you referring to Shane?

Either way, the car starts first time, but I'm certain I should replace that small black box thingee. The last auto sparky to come out and de-strand (its a word) me mentioned that they can occasionally fail.

Ta for the advice mate! I can go HKing around the fair borough of Ipswich again.

No, the module I was referring to is ignition module. I thought I read some where you had no spark?

It may be just another earth problem. Try wiggling wires at night, looking for sparks as you do so.

Same number. At least it's going now.

Will do some wiggle/checking tonight then. (Yes, this will be the highlight of an evening in Rosewood.)

Thanks!

The scary part is, watching you wiggle wires will be your neighbours highlight too.

They will be watching....

One set of neighbours will be drunk and probably unable to see. The other lot are actually quite harmless (as they too are not long-term locals).

That black relay box is definitely a cause of concern. When I bumped it mistakenly today, whilst under the hood, it made a loud click. That correlates with the noise I've been increasingly hearing lately when on the road.

New ignition module - $80.
New relay - approx $35. Me thinks I'm gonna replace this piece of trouble.

HKing - observed and duly noted.

Hi All

hmm, where do i start , ????

Most importantly - Is the car dual fuel and does the car run ok on petrol, if so then those relays are all LPG related and not ignition or starter

Do you know what the 2 relays are for ???

Usually the LPG fuel to the converter ( Lpg get heated by warm water to convert from liquid to a gas ) is controlled by a LPG safety switch, this basically send a voltage to the safety valve to open it up when cranking, once this is done its also connected to the -ve on the coil to see if the car is still running / energised if so it continues to leave the valve open

the valve opens when power is applied to it - loose power and the valve shuts - thus why its called a safety valve

Now normally you dont need a relay to open / close the LPG safety switch, so you need to trace back some wire and find back where does the black and grey relay connect to , at least 1 wire must go back to the source eg coil , HEI dizzy , starter motor , worst case senario a LPG unit

Try tapping the body of the relays with the handle of a screwdriver , sometimes the mechanism inside is stuck on open or stuck on closed, also the tapping may jar the outer body and provide a better earth

The self tapper works by screw action and friction, the sheet metal there is thin so its a bad choise - the other unit has a small metal thread nut and bolt - this is much better - as mentioned before run a small temp wire from the body earths to the ve on the battery - this will fix any earth related problems

regards
george

No-go struck again this morning....
Derrr! Should have checked this in the first place - the spark!
Whipped off a lead and found the spark was tiny. I also think that if I'm holding the end of the lead I should be getting more than a very mild jolt from it.
Chucked on a new coil and it started first time!

HKing - shocked into action.

if its a dirty old vapour system a wire from the positive battery terminal to the positive on the converter solenoid will probably do it

When did hiding rust as in knocking it and boggging it up become fixing it, alot of delusional people getting around.
