You are here

4 wheel drums

with all drum brakes.
New VH44 booster.
All lines are correct and vacuum is fine, bled properly and work fine without booster.
But when I connect vacuum and just tap the pedal it’s like I’ve jumped on the pedal.
Anyone had this before?
Is it the master cylinder having the valve in it, or too much vacuum or, or,or
Hopefully one or more of you might have an insight to this.
Thanks!

My HR was the same. Can be deadly if the drums aren't right, tricky to get used to. Worse when someone else drives your car and isn't used to them..
I've disconnected my booster, it was leaking air. But one ay I'd love to reconnet it.

Had the same thing in 1967 on a HR ute.
Fitted a VH44 for memory, and yep, took a bit of getting used to.
What we did was lower the brake pedal in line with the accelerator pedal which gave me a much better feel for the brake.
Simple to do, lower the stop and shorten the rod into the booster.

I've driven 3 cars with boosted drums I wouldn't say any of them were roadworthy they all were very touchy to the point they would lock up easierly. Like lots of other mods done in the past they are [Naughty Pottyword] or lots of blokes did it wrong. Piss the booster off it only makes it easier to push the brake pedal it doesn't give you any more brakes.

Get up that ladder grandpa your only 66.

I've got non power assisted drums on my HR..they work fine as is..but you do need to drive differently knowing their limitations...if you push too hard they will lock up..and they can take up a bit un-evenly at times..power assistance was an option..but it would not have been a dangerous one from factory...I'd say something is not set up correctly...
