The wife and I were talking about television licences on the weekend. She didn’t recall them but I could remember them in the early seventies. She asked me what happened if you didn’t have one and if anyone checked them. I couldn’t remember. Do any of the older members here recollect?

Comments

one method was that of inspections by the PMG office...so basically a knock on the door, a check of your receivers (TV and radio) and a check to see if you have an in date license..no license then a fine..a bit like riding a train without a valid ticket..or having an unregistered dog....licenses were phased out in 1974...one reason being the cost of compliance checks...in the early years radio licenses were quite expensive...they eventually combined TV and radio and became relatively lower in cost...I'd say compliance though was probably low towards the end...

Wasn't in Aus in the seventies but we had them in UK ( and they still do !!), annual fee and detector vans with antennae on roof travelled around and knocked on ya door if they detected a signal being received and you were not on the list of paid up members. Certainly wouldn't want to pay for the crap that is free to air these days.

supposedly a lot of the detector vans were fakes...just to "frighten" people into compliance...they can't detect what you are receiving but they do detect certain frequency emissions from the TV or radio when it's in use ..probably not the most reliable or accurate method...supposedly these detector vans existed in Australia as well...I think most compliance was achieved through house checks and possibly follow up after someone bought or hired a TV to see if they had a licence....there was also a licence for a motor vehicle radio..maybe why many of the pre 70s cars didn't have radios...they did exist in Australia in the early 70s..here is one from 1973.. ps sounds like you may have been a non compliant rogue! as I think was most of the population :-)

Thanks guys. I should’ve been better educated on the matter as my Dad worked for P.M.G. around Ryde, Concord, Emington
What was the idea behind it? Just another government cash grab?

originally it was to fund the production of radio stations and the ABC..which was also originally controlled by PMG..who set the licenses and collected the fees...commercial stations made their money through advertising..eventually when licenses were dropped the ABC was funded direct from government rather than revenue raised via the radio and TV licenses..

I'm not quite old enough to remember TV licenses but I do remember back in the 80's when you had to have a licence for a CB radio.

You had to have a licence for just about anything back then.
I can remember my dad taking the TV aerial and pole off the roof and then putting the aerial in the roof cavity so it would look like we didn't have a TV, just to avoid paying the licence fee.

lol my oldmans logic for the Arial in the roof was so no one knew you had a color tv and wouldn't rob you was the thinking in 1975.
Did anyone ever get charged for not having a cb licence?
I never passed CB etiquette on any RAAF base. The quote "hang on boys it just pocked its dick out" in regard to pulling a cable thru a 500 meter pipe in the ground with a with a winch got us kicked off the Air for a week, I never worked out why they need to listen to what were raving on about on our own channel for.

ha ha..never progressed very far with the machine..when I joined the Navy they gave me a small sewing kit in a small Navy blue roll up pouch..still have it and occasionally use it to sew on a button or something...some derro knocked on my door one night holding a cheap pair of jeans he had come into possession of and asked me if my wife could get her machine out and shorten and sew the legs..I laughed and said you will have to drive several suburbs away where she lives...but she never sewed anything for me in the 20 odd years ...:-)

I hear ya. My missus doesn’t sew either. I do the running repairs. I even salvage the zippers and buttons off the old worn out items just like Mum and grand ma and keep ‘em in an old jar

Wow! An outdoor aerial. Lardy dah! We had the old coiled stretched out slinky on a small bakerlite stand with the ribbon wire. Depending on which of the four channels we wanted to watch you had to shift it around the loungeroom, sometimes someone even got assigned to holding it for the duration of a show, because the minute you let it go it went fuzzy again.
That’s funny about the sewing licence. I got one too at school. I tell the missus and kids and they reckon I’m full of it.

The doc makes sewing look easy, he's at one with his machine lol. Watched him do a repair on the canvas for my camper trailer and decided to buy a sewing machine and have a go at sewing up covers for the seat cushions in it. No where near as easy as the Doc made it look but they turned out OK. My trying it was enough to convince the cook to have a go it herself and she's now sewing with it.
