Chasing parts

Looking for the impossible? Probably. But I'll have a go anyway.

No 1 - HQ Holden dash pad in reasonable or better condition.

Must be black and a two-holer for the centre air-con outlet.

I've priced and will most probably end up getting a repro one from Dash Original at about $1000, but they cannot supply the original fabric style finish. The fabric they use is close, but not exact, so before I buy, I thought I might as well try asking here. I'd rather have an original dash even if it's got a few cracks in it but in reasonable condition. The one I've got has completely had it. It's not restorable. No, it can't be recovered, it's kaputski.

No 2 - (see pic attached) I don't know what you call these things, maybe strap-hangers. They're fitted on my Statesman, at least one is. The other one is broken and I want to get a replacement made up or find one complete (black). They appear to be the same part for each side, not left or right. Also, would the experts here know if this is a fairly common part used on many models, maybe fitted to Broughams or Premiers too. I've never seen them in standard sedans, but I could be wrong.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi Andrew, thanks for your input.

Yes, I would consider that option. I've used vinyl paint before with good results. The main problem is that there aren't many dashpads out there available right now. I'll give it another month or so and see what pops up.

Cheers.

I only ever called them called ankle straps.
Did I hang around with the wrong crowd when I was young?

I think that's the technical term for them...looks like they may have been similar for quite some time...these look the same from EJ!

Andrew

Hi Andrew again. Thanks for your input.

A bit of web crawling proved you correct. The straps are indeed called assist straps. The link you provided shows exactly the same metal ring fitting. I'm not surprised and well pleased to see that they've been around since EJs and probably went to at least WBs, maybe even into some Commodores. They should be easy to come by, now I know what they're called. I know what to look for.

That one in the link (Gumtree) is too good for me to destroy when getting the new strap made up, but it's certainly cheap enough. Maybe I'm a bit odd like that - I couldn't bring myself to destroy a good EJ assist strap just for my own use. Nah, one day some fella's gonna want that blue EJ strap and good luck to him if he finds it. I'll keep looking. There must be thousands of those fittings getting around.

Thanks very much.

Hi 68surfwagon and others, thanks for all your input. Getting around to ankle straps - hmmm. Maybe that's how it got broken in the first place by the previous owner. And I always thought of him as a respectable family man. It just goes to show you should never judge the book by the cover.

Cheers.

A trimmer could probably put it on your strap.
