rebuild a 253 or replace it - What do ya reckon and how much $$

Hi Guys, 1st time poster .... i have just purchased off a mate a 73 HQ UTE with a 253V8 in it .. It hasn't been driven or started in over 2 years ... and its on gas/petrol as well ...although i will get rid of the gas crap... It does leak some oil but was running good before he parked it in his shed, and let the rego run out ... My questions are 1) What would it cost ( APPROX) to rebuild the engine and work it a bit ... Give it a lumpy cam and make it sound nice at idle ...
Or do you replace it with a already reconditioned 253 0r 308 although i,m not prepared to spend big bucks ..
I,m not handy or too mechanicly minded so all works would be done by my mechanic ...

I'm on the wrong side of 50, so all i want is to relive my Monaro days of the 70,s .... I don't want a 400hp beast, just a nice sounding pushrod V8 that i can drive on Sundays ...
Very much appreciate your responses and tks in advance .... Rog

First is the car matching numbers ?
Are you going to rebuild the motor or have someone build it ?
Nowadays its cheaper to buy a crate motor turn key and box. After all it’s all there and all brand new with warranty ! ! !

I guess that's all relative...many cashed up Eastern Sea Board posters around here..semi retired gardeners buying chevs when bored, FIFO oil and gas workers and so on... :-)...my thinking is a recoed engine plus bits and pieces fitted about $5K and maybe $8K upwards for something mild...if it was running well before and you only want a Sunday driver then for a lot less you could repair any major oil leaks...sounds like you want and exhaust system..extractors and mufflers as well..I'd just keep it stock and enjoy it for what it is..get it running reliable..the performance of these cars isn't like a modern car ...if you want some real get up and go I'd say you have to spend big bucks...but that's from a poor South Aussie perspective...

nah just regular drivers in reasonable condition AL..not worth big bucks that's for sure like some of the highly valued and sought after models..being a tight arse I'm more inclined to only preserve than upgrade or update...I don't mind driving a 50 year old car that feels like a 50 year old car...part of the enjoyment..I remember learning to drive in my dad's HT and that felt like an old clapped out banger ...and it wasn't all that old then!

That's all my 2 are to mate a few dents ,scrapes and scratches,I reckon you're right an old car has to feel like driving an old car as long as it's safe in fairly good condition and reliable. It doesn't make sense to me to pour thousands of dollars into them anymore, been there before!...

Do up the 253 with a bit of a cam and find a 4 barrel quaddie off a 253 blue motor along with the distributor and get a 4 barrel inlet manifold. I used to say put a 308 in its place but the other things you'll find yourself changing will most likely blow your budget even if it is a 308 it will still lose a drag race to most new cars anyway I still like the sound when the secondary's open

Due to the fact Dreamers want the earth for old 2nd hand parts that are half rooted most of the time. I can no longer be bothered with old holdens.
