Kero & paint

Hey guys, When I was young, a panel beater friend said to use a few cupfulls of kero with water rather than soapy carwash. He said the kero would keep the paint in good condition, help rejuvenate poor paint and have the added benefit of preventing rust around stainless trips / clips. (Of course this is relating to older cars). He reckoned that newer car washes contributed to rust problems.
Ive used it, but not regularly. has anyone else used it or know about it?
Im going to try it today on the HT which has pretty poor paint ATM and then polish it.

My father in law swore by using kero instead of car wash.
He had an XY Fairmont wagon (302 Windsor auto).
By the mid 1980s his paint looked old, but fairly good. It was chalky.
As for rust, it had some minor rust in the lower corners of a couple of the doors.
It was a very well looked after car but never polished, always garaged.
Overall, I would say the paint and body was in no better condition than any other well kept car of it's age.
If you paint is looking old and a bit chalky, try some Maguiars Quick Wax.
Our EH is Umber (dark brown) and gets chalky. I do it twice a year and it comes up very well. The quick wax won't strip as much paint off as polish but the result is just as good.

Old is good.

It would not be a few cup fulls but actually one cap full, the bottle cap that is.
I remember it from the 60's and yes, it does assist as a cleaner, and it also covers any paint chips with an oily coating to stop rust on those spots.

been using car washes for years and all of the cars I've had stayed pretty good. Most of the car washes these days have a Carnauba wax in them and some have corrosive inhibitors in them, not like the old car washs.I wash all mine and the Mrs with Armour All wash & Wax, great stuff looks good when finished and 3 of them are Black.Alby for your paint you could try the Meguires or Mothers Clay Bar Kithttps://www.ebay.com... I've used it on my cars and it smooths your paint out nicely,a few panel beaters use it.Then you could get the Dupont red colour polish https://www.ebay.com... Ive got 2 bottles of this and it's good to use on the swirl marks and small scratches, not the be all to end all of coarse but it does look a lot better when you've finished !...

my wife and I owned our own business as Car Detailers when we first met 17 years ago,and did ALL New and used cars for Holden and Toyota to name a few contracts.
KERRO, you must use the "White Kerro" and BE CAREFUL IF YOU HAVE PAINT PROTECTION, all the kerro does is remove grime and tar from your paint,( put in spray bottle and spray from windows down, let sit for a minute or two and hose of bulk, repeat and the spray and and waite and then wipe off excess)
you still have to use a car wash and wax, for you paint if you don't have a good paint protection. All you do is use one that doesn't have a "caustic" in it like CT18,CT20 truck wash is a NO NO BIG TIME.
I use a product from Autosmart called "Duet" Its a wash and wax thats safe on all types of paints with our with out paint protections
You can buy it on line in 5lts or 20lts
AND I USE THIS ON ALL MY CARS and Bikes
Surfman and Alby, as for "Clay Bars"' its an easy way and the first step you use before buffing a cars paint and it smooths it out and in some cases you don't have to buff a car BUT when you do buff you remove, scratches and oxide paint, chalky paint and swirl marks.

Surfman, the secret to a black paint car if you buff it is "Keep it wet" but that's between us lol, I use a product and ive use it for years and swear by it called "Farecer C3" there's a pic for you mate.
P.S this product will remove, scratches, swirl and WATER SPOTS on dark colour cars, faded paint and oxide paint, its a product that MY Trademaster still uses today.
Yes there are some NEW stuff on the market, BUT I USE THIS
