gee Al I was going to ask how the hip replacement was going...been a long time waiting and not due till Nov...in hindsight do ya reckon having the private health cover would have been better to get it done sooner...not being able to work that long must be putting a sting in the finances...unless you have a missus with a good job you can sponge off lol...

Yeah it's a long wait mate for sure,I'm still getting paid from work,I'm in my last few weeks of holiday pay now then I go onto sickness benefits(centerlink)and just have sick leave with no pay from work. It's not much to live on no but at least it's something plus use some of my own money.I worked it out to be the cheaper option this way because the operation costs about $32,000 to have.I'm not in private and have nothing against being in a private fund but I have heard some people have forked out about $6000 out of there own pocket anyway for the same Op.In saying that I'm booked in for a Ultra sound guided Cortisone shot in my hip next week, to see if that makes any difference and may help me to get back to work for a few months until the November booking!...Thanks mate...
ps,the Mrs works full time as a Nurse and I do sponge off her occasionally, only for beer money though!..:-)

yea not worth it mate for sure,
My wife was in the highest one there was a few yeas ago and still had to fork out $$$$$, This time she went public and YES we had to pay, BUT my smart wife recond that the amount she saved on privet health fund,it worked out cheaper, and got the same treatment and all the same care
So yea I recon its a BIG rip of for Privet health care.

Surfmane, I work with an older gentleman out hear, who went thro the hip replacement a few years ago, he had the Cortisone shot in the hip a couple of times and said it hurt like hell for a day or so BUT was able to go about his normal duties at work as a Diesel Mechanic and he went thro the public system no worries, Has had the replacement and is as good as gold, Hes in his late 60s, so he tells everyone out hear but I know hes 71 and is as fit as i am lol

ok hope all goes well and the cortisone does the trick to keep you going until the op..sometimes it works a treat and other times doesn't help but you have to give it a try...I had one of those ultra sound guided injections in my shoulder years ago..at first it felt good but when the anesthetic wore off it was no better...good you have the leave and work flexibility...hey you can always ask the wife to work the night shift and get some extra ...for your hobbies and well being while you are suffering..:-) and yes I have been forking our for health insurance for years and just don't think it's worth it but my fear is that as soon as I drop it something happens and then I wish I had the choice...arrrggghhh

If something urgent happens and you are a public patient you will get in straight away anyway.
The problem with being a public patient is your doctor decides how urgent your need is, and you wait accordingly.
I've just had three days in hospital for gall bladder removal that was more preventative maintainance than an emergency. The doctor said I could wait up to 3 months, but I was done in 6 weeks.
I've been a public patient since I got sick 16 years ago and the only trouble I've ever had was with people who didn't know how to treat my problems.

yeah mate absolutely loving not going to work each day, after 46 years of the grind. Have not moved as yet but the plan is in motion now, full steam (er) ahead now. Hope all goes really well for your hippie replacement mate, and the injection does the job too so you can do some work before November. The old Chev sounds the go I like the shape of the 50 -54 Chevs. No oldie as yet will wait until moved so one less big item to take, cheers Al, all the best, Lindsay.

I think the same as Andrew, the old “what if” situation. I’ve mention to family and friends about dropping out of private health over the years, but the general comment has been “ooh ya don’t wanna do that! They’ll get ya come tax time”. What exactly are the additional costs? Just curious.

I really don't think they get you come tax time.
Everyone who earns above around $35,000 pays the 2% medicare levy.
If you earn above $90,000 and have no health insurance you will also pay a surcharge of around 1.5% of your taxable income, which is around $1,400 or $26 a week on $90,000 a year. If I could earn $90,000 a year I'd happily pay the surcharge.
If you pay into a health fund you are entitled to a rebate, but I believe most health fund get their rebate through lower fees when they pay their membership.

yes there is the additional medicare levy surcharge so that is one stick and the other stick is additional health insurance premiums for being over 31 and each year not having hospital cover...so if you are a middle income earner over 31 you sort of become penalised for not having basic hospital ..the argument sometime ago was that it worked out the similar price...I'd like a system whereby you accumulated some kind or=f credits or reward points ovcr the years if you don't claim or like other insurance a no claim bonus to reduce costs...many people drop out when they retire because of the costs and thats when they most likely would benefit from it...the main benefit being choice of doctor and getting something done earlier rather than later...but that's about it...you hear many stories of people being slugged extra for having insurance...if you use the public system then you may as well be a public rather than private patient and yes in an emergency you don't have any choice you get what you get and hopefully someone competent...
