URGENT - IDENTIFYING GENUINE SANDMAN

Hi,
I am viewing a Panel Van tonight that has been advertised as a Sandman, however I am a little concerned that it is not a genuine Sandman but a replica. Is there any way of determining if it is a Sandman, perhaps from the VIN? Any help would be great.

John is right, with one exception...if it was built in Brisbane, a Sandy will have XX7 or XU4 stamped on the Compliance Plate.

another way to tell is the seating capacity, all sandmans are only 2 seaters

also the tyre load should be around 2200kgs from memory

Seating capacity of 2 is a prerequisite for a Sandy.

A normal Van/ute has a GVW of 2200 kg, most Sandmans had a GVW of 1950 to 2000 kg.

hmm yes both are right tyre placard is one way but can easily be changed to another car or if your good enough you can make a sticker look exactly the same, so i wouldnt just go by that. (many have been removed over time aswell) the only way if it hasnt got one of the xx7 or xu3 is to go by all the plate readings etc. trim eng code seat capacity and everything. and still you may not be able to tell if its genuine. sandmans are so had to identify as they where made in all plants not just brissy. brissy where to only ones to use the xx7 or xu3 stamping tho. if you send me the pics of all 3 id plates i can let you know if its a sandy or not.

Another surefire check for pannos is if it has got the full headlining or if not at least the tiny metal hooks welded to the roof which were used to hold said hoodlining in place

Identifying an original Sandman panelvan or ute is probably one of the hardest vehicles to identify. Due to the fact that GM Holden didn't provide any standard identifiable code(s) to all sandman ID plates from all manufacturing plants and the ease of which one can option up a regular ute or panelvan to Sandman standards.

The only 2 codes that were released on a Sandman ute or panelvan was the option code of XX7 and XU3. XX7 being the more common of the 2. These 2 codes were only ever stamped on the ID plate of all Brisbane, (Acacia Ridge plant), made Sandmans. Both refer to the type of tyres supplied on the vehicle of that model. XU3 being the same as standard commercial tyres which are rated for load carrying, (14.5cwt). XX7's being the same as standard passenger vehicle tyres which rode and handled much better, (10cwt).

More information can be found from the tyre placard part numbers which is located inside the glovebox door. The Sandman had a unique tyre placard because the wheels were sports wheels and not the standard commercial wheels. The tyre placard contains information pertaining to the wheel and tyre combination and as such is different for all vehicles.
This method is a definite way of identifying a HZ sandman panelvan or ute only. There is a grey area on the HX sandman placards and the HQ and HJ sandmans aren't listed as having different tyre placard part numbers to that of the standard vans and utes.
HZ Sandman
The HZ Sandman variants were based on the standard HZ Holden Commercial panelvan and ute, not the Kingswood panelvan and ute as some have thought. The model code on the ID plate should therefore read:
Panelvan: 8WM70
Ute: 8WM80
Anything other than these 2 codes is definitely not a standard HZ Commercial, therefore not likely to be a Sandman.

The HZ model series was released in July 1977.

A couple of notable differences with the HZ Sandmans - V8 only. With the 4.2litre (253) as standard and the 5.0litre (308) as an option. Therefore if it has a 6cyl then its not a Sandman.
Twinheadlight front with GTS style plastic front air dam.
HZ had RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension. RTS badges are located on the dashboard facia and lower tailgate.
HZ Sandmans had bucket seats, therefore the seating capacity should read 2 on the Safety Compliance Plate.

The Vehicle Identification Number is the go, dont listen to any of these people they sound like they dont really know much at all, contact General Motors Holden at Elizabeth South Australia, with the VIN of the Sandman you wish to purchase...i am sure that the person you are buying from wont mind.....You will find the number for General Motors Holden in your phone book Under Holden Manafacturer.

To HoldenItDown - the Vin tells you nothing, and Holden's records are not like Fords - they can only tell you general details about the car, not weather it is a Sandman or not.

Anyway, as a general rule:

*Must be a 2 seater
*Must have a vehicle mass below 2200Kgs
*Must be a V8 for a HZ model

There are a few Kingswood variant vans in existance in the HX and HZ range, where as the HQ and HJ vans were either Belmont or Kingswood.

Check Byron Rich's site (monaroparts.com) and use that as the best collection of identifying resources.

Its like a wild goose chase but in the end its all worth it!! I picked up a Sandman van a few months ago for the grand sum of 275 bucks!! The owner knew nothing about it and I was suss from the moment I seen the orange paint under the flat black on it now!!
I emailed the owner before the last one and got a heap of info!! He'd had it for twenty three years and had put a statesman dash, interior, and front on it after a smash!! It was stolen and partialy stripped!!
Anyway it turns out it is a sandman and will be on the road eventually!!
It's a hard one to know for sure as the cars are all old and been to hell and back!! With lots of bits swapped over along the way!! Telling you that the sticker in the glove box is the key is an insult as most of them have been replaced!!
Anyway as i said once before in this thread- go to the sandman website and email them with your details, vin, codes etc and they will get back to you.. But the catch is that no one knows for sure!!!

vin codes will tell you nothing Bobby,,
once you have all the keys in place, the gross vehicle weight will be the only factor confirming it,,
and guess where you are told this? yep the tyre placard,,
I suppose you think that your van is a sandy because someone told you they changed the dash to a statesman one so the tyre placard is now different?
If you have a full length headlining, a 2 seater, and a belmont then highly likely it is a sandy, if you have a Kingswood, with a full headlining, then highly likely it is just that, a Kingswood,,,,

Just to clarify things here!! I know ( dont think) its a sandman because as I stated I know the owner that had it for 23 years and he showed me pics of it when he bought it , besides this he is not a liar!!
The tyre placard IS a sticker easily reproduced!!
Anyway I know what I have and so does the Sandman owners club thats all that matters!!

I'm intrigued,, how do you KNOW it is a sandman then?
simply because someone told you it was?
I don't see how you can state that it can be identified purely from the VIN numbers,, even the sandmanowners site wouldn't be that naive
and before you start snapping at me, you are the one here that has said people have laid insults by their comments, which contradict what only YOU think, but you see the truth is, the tyre placard IS the key, get over it,,,,

NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT ENGINE NUMBER WAS IN MY HJ SANDMAN WHEN IT COME OUT OF THE FACTORY HOW DO I GO ABOUT THIS IV BEEN TOLD IT WAS LAST REGOED IT VIC BUT THEY HAVE NO RECORDS, IM IN THE MIDDLE OF A RESTO AN IT DIDNT COME WITH A MOTOR. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT.q

You may already have this answer but if not....
Call GMH on 1800 033 349 and ask for authentication of a vehicle. From memory they only need the VIN and they will be able to email you an Authenticity letter that will have the original engine number and a bunch of other info.

a couple of golden rules for it to be a sandman….
1. NEVER a column shift
2. only a 2 seater
3. M70 or M80 bodies only (belmonts)
4. check the spare tyre winch…..small inverted cup shape for rally rims (as opposed to a "hat' shaped retainer plate)
5. In vans, there should be an extra channel welded into the roof at the back for the hood liner to be tucked into with a pinch weld piece.

I have an unmolested HX sandman survivor (all numbers match and all providence as well.)

For The Record……I am reliably informed that HQ & HJ Sandmans were optioned to have a 6 cyl, and a few of them were ordered.

Just a question I just had a look at the tags of a hq panelvan via email as I'm in a different state and I'm interested in buying ,comp plates state build date 8/74 2 seater Belmont 308 eng Aussie 4 speed Salisbury diff brown interior but I haven't worked out the paint code as yet it has flutes in guards but the GVW says 4850 does this mean it was a commercial. Van and sandman thanks in advance for comments that will help regards Glenn

The 4850lbs on the ADR plate means it belongs to a V8 body, the weight for a 6 is 4750lbs this applies to both standard commercials and Sandy's

What is the paint code and I will decode it for you.

To id an HQ Sandy you need to look for console mounts as a full console was only available on a commercial vehicle if it is a Sandman.

V8 Belmont Ute, Barbados Green with Black bucket seat interior, it could be a Sandman, what is the build month? It must fall between 1/74 and 9/74 to be a Sandman. 30B is a Sandman code but that alone doesn't make it a Sandman. If it is a Sandman then it is very saleable, but the condition of the ute as a whole must be considered, how much rust etc, how much work is involved in restoring it will determine what it is worth. The missing VIN tag will dramatically affect the price as this is a big part of the id of a Sandman, the chassis number must match the number on the ADR tag.

I have a satin mist hj sandman van paint 56715947 trim1901 19v l31 m41 gu7 which is308 t400 2.78diff was told there were some made with this combo and were called a super sandman can anyone please shed some light on this for me as I can't seem to find any info about this have been on my sandman and all matches up help would be greatly appreaciated thanks

I have found a panel van all GTS interior siting in paddock vin 8M70TFL348459J M21 gearbox L31 engine GV4 axel 3.36 Salabury diff an a GVW 1950 can't see the passenger amount does this sound like a sandman
