HG engine identification - 253 or 308?

Hi all,

I'm lookin at a HG ute that I need some help identifying what the original engine was.

From the tags I've worked out it's a Kashmir White/Green interior V8 Kingswood. It's running currently running a 308 Trimatic and banjo diff (single wheeler). The current owner has said the engine had been replaced when he bought it however the Trimatic and diff are 100% factory original.

Is there any way to determine from the ID plates if it was 253 or 308 when it left the factory?.

Cheers - Neil
