Restore, Preserve or Modify an OH ?

interested in thoughts and reasons...?

Comments

I'm a big believer in"do what ya wanna do be what ya wanna be"I've had modified cars and original cars in the past and love both.I've kept my HK pretty much preserved as I can this time because I wanted a car that reflected my old surfing days and mainly because it has a lot of original things on it including the engine. If I was to modify another old holden I'de probably buy a body less motor and box!...

I've ended up (not through some kind of planning) at a stage where I'm preserving some decent condition originals - using them regularly which offers opportunity to tinker and do things..I like everything to work properly....and it doesn't cost too much...it's always tempting though to think of upgrades - esp performance....noting though our modern cars provide us that...and it's good to be reminded of how they actually were in the day and what the average person/family had...I'm satisfied with preserving at the moment...maybe when retired would have more time for larger scale restoration or just to get an old survivor to good all round condition and back on the roads again.....if you have a family heirloom your motivations may be different...it's amazing how much time effort and $$$ some people have put into their cars...

Andrew

Im with you surfman.."do what ya wanna do be what ya wanna be"
Its your car, your money... yes ive had both. A 1966 HR ute 186 bord 192 with a 161 head triple 1 1/2 su's 4seed
A 1978 Pontiac trans-am 6.6LT TH 400 All original.
And of Course MY Dear old Dad's 1975 HJ Holden Prem that had a heart transplant in the year 2000, A 1989 TPI chev and TH700.
only because the 253 and auto died(of Dad towing caravans and boats the old wog lol) and this set up was a bargain price and came complet with a good fuel economy to match around 10-12L/100. BUT Ive tried to leave the rest of the car as original as i can, if people call it a sleeper, than so be it.
I call it Mine lol

Each to their own. If I had an original matching numbers vehicle it would stay just that. I don't have that so sky is the limit. But stay tasteful. No spoilers or flared guards. They are for the ricers.

The well looked after models are always going to be more collectable in original form. More original - more collectable.
Restored models can benefit from period/tasteful upgrades.
If you plan to keep the model for a life time I recon make it suit your desires.
Cheers Rod

Reading the comments above made me think of my car, I am retired and bought this SS brand new 17 years ago, not really an old Holden yet, but it is completely original, same as the day I drove it out of the show room, 92,000km on the clock, have been tempted to modify a few times, but glad I left it original.
I have had modified cars in my younger days.

In line with Al's comments basically it's your car do what you want with it and make it your own , if mint original is your thing then that's fine , same if barn ( sorry read as shed ) dust & patina gets you going then power to you .Personally I'm over going to shows and viewing row upon row of shiny originals , just boring now , the cars and the owners ! My all time favourite car at meets and track events is actually Flatrat , if you can dream that up and put it together then you love your cars !

Love checking out the restored oldies but no desire to own/drive one as i'm into doing my own thing, money and talent shortage being the only restraint, being useless and poor isn't very helpfull, lol.
My daily driver/shopping trolley/tow car is a HX kingswood, modified 208, toyota 5 speed, h/duty suspension.
number one project is a HK GTS 186s with 265 hemi, ford toploader and 9 inch
number two project is a bitza chop with 56 triumph frame, 73 yamaha motor and rear wheel, 76 kwaka f/end.
I'd want none of the above in standard form.

"Junk is something you throw out 3 weeks before you need it"

I prefer original and maintained. Even period accessories. Probably think this way as when you've got a couple of cars you have to share the wealth amongst them (dollars are tight so you lived with worts and all and crappy carbs that need rebuilds etc) I tend to walk past big dollar cars at shows. I do like the rat look too, it's great to see a rat parked up next to a big $ resto and see the owner get pi$$ed when people take pix of the rat over his.
