MIG Welders for Auto Repair - Cheap V Cheaper

Hi Guys,

I am considering upgrading my MIG welder, Its a chinese multiprocess unit (Cost me $400). I am working on old japanese cars (much thinner steel than Old Holdens) and Finding my results are a bit inconsistent.

I am wondering if upgrading to something a little better (looking at Bossweld MS180 ~$700) to yield better results.

Keen to see if anyone else has upgraded and noticed a difference (particularly for thin materials)

FYI i am using .6 wire with Argoshield light gas.

TIA

Ash

When all is said and done the finished job is a reflection of the workers ability and a good tradie will do a good job regardless of quality of tool used (but bad tool may encourage bad language !! ) , having said that a better tool may well help the back yard guy improve his skill over a lesser tool so as always buy the best tools that you can afford on the day to achieve the best results.

Definitely does make a difference the quality of machine you are using.
We upgraded our old CIGWELD 140 twin to a Bossweld 250 and they are chalk and cheese.
It doesn't necessarily matter that it's a name brand machine, but the one big thing we found is the duty cycle.
There isn't much point buying a 250amp welder if the duty cycle is 35% and 100% at 100amps.
We tried to find the highest duty cycle rating. I think from memory, our machine is something like 65%@250amps and 100%@200amps, may not be the exact figures, but you get the idea.
The other thing is finding a reputable seller, who is knowlegable and will give you genuine advice.
If your in Brisbane I would recommend speaking with Dave at DAE repair services at Archerfield.
If your looking online I would say Graeme at Magnum Welders is worth talking to
Hope that helps
