Yeah mate,I did notice them,I've got original letters and numbers on my plates since new but the plates themselves where reordered some time in the mid 70s,probably due to fading or accident?...
Although I can get SUR68F off myplates NSW in a beach backgroung style if I like they are available!...
My mate has SUR66F on his HR Prem Wagon!...

my HR has kind of original plates - it was originally a government car so had a red Z plate to begin with...then in 69 when it was sold to first private owner it had the SA plates installed...I changed for new ones a couple of years ago because the old were faded and a bit rusted...looked a bit manky..but the lettering and numbers of the new plates just don't look as good..thinner and they have made the one actually distinguish from an lower case L - which were the same on the old style plates to avoid confusion I suppose..in the end I decided to hand paint the originals..and they came up pretty good and just look better and right for the period...pic here of car with new plates and then the oldies with a touch up..bored on winter night so decided to paint my number plates at the kitchen table like you do..

They don't miss you these days. I wanted to get my old B&W plates back when i moved back from Samoa. Yes, i could Get AJ 042 BUT "That attracts an annual fee now thank you very much". I handed them in in 2006 and just thought id rock up and get them again when i moved back. Plates are big business these days but I was a BIG loser with them back in 2009!

Al, the trick is to have not handed them in! Took my personal plates in recently after 10yrs (initials, birth year, 2 letter, 4 number, white on black, NSW) Said I had forgotten about them and found in shed clean out. Was told would have to pay for the new plates however no annual fee because wasn't having to pay when first purchased. I mean rented πŸ˜ƒ

Yeah mate you could have put them in storage back then with the RTA if you wanted to but might have cost a bit for a few years?Yeah I've got ALS57L on my ute and the same cost plate SUR68F(3 letters,2 numbers,1 letter)is the cheapest plate I think,$280 up front cost and $105 annually, although there is a few different formats. Also some design plates are more expensive for the up front fee to!.
Maybe SUR70F might be available,I'll check it out if ya like?...Unless your HT is late 69 then SUR69F might be available?...

Be buggered if i'll hand over good money year after year. In hindsight i should have put them in storage but back then, no one was talking or suggesting annual fees for the old B&W plates. It was a one off fee. From what i understand, as soon as you change letters or numbers, an annual fee is attracted. Only changing plate style is a 1 off fee

in SA we pay a one off reservation fee for R and S alpha numeric plates - not too much. These were the standard plates that were fitted to cars from about 67/68 onwards so cover a lot of the cars we like..but earlier cars had all numbers (white on black background) and these are available via auction now in dribs and drabs...you could also reserve those at one stage but a long time ago...a mate had a 55 FJ with original plates and he moved to WA for a posting with defence...he changed the rego as he needed to and took the old plates off and kept them in the boot thinking when he moved back he would re-register - wrong - it's kind of sad...see many very nicely restored cars with new plates that just don't look right and then some old clapped out Magna getting around with plates that should be on a 40s or 50s car...they have been an investment now for sometime...looking on line all the cars I've owned have the plates still available - of no value lol

They look much better with original plates. As you said, even if you re-order originals, they dont look the same with differences in the gauge of metal and letter shapes. A shame your mate missed out with the FJ. I'm sure he'd be allowed to do do it though, (For an annual fee)

sadly that's it with the very old plates...if you let them go - in this case re-registering in a different state - the gov takes them and then puts them up for auction...so you would have to first have "your" plates be released for auction and they drip feed them to maximise price and also be the highest bidder...I think he needed to have reserved them at time of transfer...now he can't get them back..he did enquire and got told they were not available...he has the original plates still

and most of all its the principle of the money grab that really pees me off. I wont do it for that reason. At the moment ive just got the standard yellow and black 2 letter 2 digit 2 letter plate. Its not ideal, but will have to do. Maybe one day i can get what i want when the bean counters in Service NSW loosen their grip but im not holding my breath.

I re ordered my Black and white plates about 25 years ago and put a good frame with the dust seals on mine. I still have the original plates there were on the car from new there just a bit faded and i was pulled up, thats why i got the new ones back then.
I paid $65 to have mine "custom" to my car only. so even if i sell the car (like hell) I get to keep the plates.
This also allowed me to also use them as "club plates" instead of the "S" club plate in QLD.... mine you the $65 i paid was around 10 years ago, so who knows how much there are now lol
To me the "black and White" plates is something that sets the older cars off from the others with the personal plates

The government in NSW sold the personalised number plate business a few years ago.
The private company is the one who put the prices up and expanded the range.
We must have over 100 different styles and colours now.
I believe that now if your car is unregistered for over 12 weeks now, you must get new plates if the car is registered again. If you had personalised plates on it, you then have to get them again at the current price.
If you lose a personalised plate, you must report it to the police and get an event number, which you then take to the RMS. I think you can apply for a replacement plate after 6 months.
