speedo drive gear ratio- this time with details

Guys and girls
This time with more info :)

I have a hq 1 ton with a 4 speed - white speedo cable gear, 225/65/14 inch tyres, 3.55:1 diff. My speedo is misbehaving is the white gear correct? It seems to read high, need to get a gps to test eventually.

Wouldnt mind some help as cant get any locally

Cheers

The white one would read about 12kph to high - the dark blue 22 tooth gear would be the one you want.

I made up a javascript calculator that works out wheel diameters, takes into account diff ratio, the normal driven gear size in the gearbox, and the cable revs that speedos are calibrated to (thanks to SpeedoTom on these forums some time back). When I can finally fill in the missing info regarding gears and colours for a few different boxes, I intend to upload it to the Holenpaedia - at the moment only covers manual "aussie" boxes.

I would be interested in this and I think so would a lot of other people as well.
What other information are you looking for to do with this as I have a few parts books and may be able to help.
There was a discussion on another site about speedo's and some useful information came to light to.

I have managed to get most of the gears and part no info for the aussie 4speed/3speed all syncro/trimatic boxes, but have a few missing. I believe the trimatic uses the blue 9 tooth (5258494) drive gear as standard, but need to confirm that. I think the 1 tonner 4speed (when a 4.44 diff is fitted) uses a 5258574 drive gear, but not sure what colour this is or how many teeth. I also think there is a red 7 tooth drive gear, but don't know the part number - perhaps this is the 1 tonner one?

Also trying to collect info on TH350, Muncie, Saginaw & Powerglides, and believe they are all compatible. Have part numbers and colours for 9 different driven gears, but need to find out the various drive gear colours, sizes, part numbers and which is standard with which box.

I think this will be very handy when I can get all the info together, but is a little more difficult to do now that I have moved to a different city and no longer have my contact to the Holden spare parts manuals.

M40/Aussie speedo drive gears:
8/White.
9/Blue.
10/Yellow.
It is not a case of the blue gear being the standard one. As it differs between models.
White and Blue are the most common.
I can't remember what the H-series boxes have in them. But every Commodore box I have seen in the last few years(and I've seen a few.lol.),have had white drive gears.

AFAIK the Yellow were only for the Tonners with the 4.44 diffs.(Note AFAIK, not KFF(Know for fact).
Cheers.

When the Tonners use a 4.44 diff, the tailshaft and engine revs are much higher, so the drive gear should be smaller to slow the speedo cable down a bit, which is why I was thinking the red one. I have seen mention of the yellow 10tooth one, but have no idea what the part number is or what it is used for - perhaps used for very tall diff options like 2.60 ? Need some more concrete info before I include it.

A mate has a VK 5 litre V8 Trimatic with a 2.60 diff and it uses the 10 tooth yellow gear and he is looking for a replacement one. I suggested Rare Spares. Not sure if he found one yet.

GM part number on this is 9942796 - I don't think RS stock these. Email Rusty here, as I think he may be able to supply these.

Excellent lot of info there. between these scans, the FastLane thread linked to, Rare Spares listings, and Google (GM use the same part numbers in the US as well), I virtually have all the gear sizes, colours, Holden part numbers, and Rare Spares part numbers (where applicable) for the various configurations of 3speed all-syncro, Aussie 4speed, Trimatic, Saginaw, Muncie, Powerglide, TH350, and TH400 boxes. All, that is, except one (which popped up in that last lot of scans).....

The 6cyl 1 tonner 3speed uses a 7tooth drive gear 9928961 - I need to know what colour this is if anyone can advise?

Need to brush up on my Javascript programming now to sort this lot out, but hopefully should have something to upload to Holdenpaedia in the next couple of days.

Thanks for all the info!

Cheers

Scratch the request above - looks like 9928961 is a red gear, same as the 4speed version. Now I should have the lot.

The 7 tooth in the V series trimatic is listed as red but I cannot find anything else to back this up as the same as three speed 7 tooth.
We have a HX parts book at work, but I am on three weeks holiday so it will be a while before I can check that one.
I have also noticed that there is a section in the front of the parts books that list what QRQ QRU etc tyre ratings relate too. For example QRQ is a 185 SR14 4 P/R Textile Belted Radial BSW T/Less.
Do you want this info too.
Cheers Paul.

Thanks, but no thanks - those codes just seem to confuse the issue and have little in common to what tyre sizes most people tend to use these days. Most of the earlier codes (pre HJ) refer to crossply tyres anyway.

Thanks for all your help on this - much appreciated.

With that diff ratio, you have a little more work to do. Even the smallest Pink 19 tooth gear will still have your speedo running 8% too slow. You would need to change the drive gear on the gearbox output shaft to a blue 9 tooth one (Rare Spares p/no SG1001) and use the Pink 19 tooth driven gear (Rares p/no SG1006)

Hopefully soon, there will be an easy to use calculator for determining gear selections (which also spits out relevant part numbers) in Holdenpaedia - the one I have been working on is finished and am currently liaising with Rusty to get it uploaded.
