XU2 V8 vrs's LH XU2!!
By Redbeard 28/12/05@11:27 Shed
Thought I'd add my two bobs worth.
I believe the LJ V8s(which didn't make full production) was going to be code named LJ XU1-V8.
I believe the LH was going to be the XU2-but that wasn't to be..

Yes,I have the books with this in it,when I run across them again(have thousands of them!!) I'll post it..

That's my understanding of the situation. The only official Holden literature I've seen reference to 'XU-2' was in relation to LH's.

Yes.... and to summarise, what you are all talking about is the super car scare. Many prototype vehicles and engines were dumped at sea after the Australian Goverment got all scared about these high powered production cars that were planned to be built in minumin no's to allow them to be raced at Bathurst.
Xu2 or xu1 v8, Phase IV 4 door, charger E55 and E49 were all part of the plann for bathurst, but when holden put the plannes for the v8 xu1 to the motoring world, many people soiled thier cordaroy pants and most of the projects were scrapped.
This era caused major changes in the touring car class.
These cars were built and tested and valiant went into production with 2 of thier supercars.
Holden dumped engines ofshore at Glenelg SA. after scrapping thier plannes.
What a waste, If only they knew what we would be driving around in today....... tinfoil 500hp hsv's and dare I say fpv's

Your post alludes to a situation but has a factual clanger or two.
Under what circumstances would a car company seriously consider just throwing out premium performance cars &/or motors, especially in such a ridiculous way? Obviously, they weren't breaking the law by building such motors, so I can't fathom (no pun intended) a single realistic reason to do such a thing.
I fell for big urban myth when I was a lot younger, but this one is just silly.

Yes it sounds far feched, but it did happen. Im sure you have heared about the many surpluss airplanes that were also dumped to sea after ww2 ?
I'm sorry I cant prove that it accualy happened...... Whish I could. Perhaps I need do some reacherch of my own on it.....Ill post any progress.
One thing I do know is that when the goverment tell a manufacturer that they will pull out of a high volume vehicle contract if any "supercars" are sold to the public, they do listen.
You sure are the man to be teaching debate to your kids..... If only everyone else could remain diplamatic.

becuase the government siad if they kept makeing the cars they would stop buying fleet cars.

and this is by By the Sun –Herald 25 june 1972 A V8 Holden Torana, which will replace the 6 cylinder XU1 as GMH’s top competition car Weight of the V8 Torana is believed to be only 65 lb greater than the 6 cylinder xu1, although power has received a 50% boost. The engine has been fitted further back in the body shell, and handling is reputed

to be superior to that of the xu1.

The car has a close ratio gearbox (with 120mph possible in third) and wide alloy wheels. The Torana V8 heralds a “boots and all” approach by GMH to end the recent domination of the Bathurst race by F

in super fords no.1 winter 1987 magazine there are 3 news paper cut-outs saying holden is making a v8 torana it dosent say what model and chrysler said they were making a v8 super car....there are two letters from ford's vechicle marketing manager the 1st one is dated june 20th 1972 saying that the phase 4 gt-ho is now in production and the 2nd on june 3rd 1972 saying "there never has been,is not now and never will be,such an option during the life of the XA falcon model

Hmm, I can believe that: losing a big fat gov't contract is a pretty serious reason for Holden to have 'had a dump' at sea. Thanks for the heads-up fellas.

That bit about the engine moved back sniffs of a muddled reference by a partly-informed journo. I'm thinking it could be related to 2 things: either the natural posi of the V8 means the motor's centre of gravity is a little rearward of the 6's, OR it could be about the already existing V8-equipped rally LJs having the firewall cut out and modded allowing the donk to be moved even further back.

According to all the info, there was only one mod needed, a 6 inch section of lip removed from the sub frame which had zero effect on rigidity...

The motor wasnt sat further back, its just that the engine is 2 cylinders shorter in length being a v8 so it moved its centre weight further back and also left a decent gap between the engine and rediator. weight was further behind the front cross member/axles so therefor it handles heaps better than the long 6 cylinder engine. you get exactly the same effect on a LH/LX and UC with the V8 fitted.

When the Phase 4 got Stopped, the 200 spare parts of every thing never got dumped in the Sea lol,Ford put some Phase 4 Motors in Early 1972 model Fairlanes,LTD's,Falcons etc etc to get rid of them and into RPO XA GT as well and used them up that way,and had to put the 200 sets of the XA Phase 4 Wheels on all sourts of XY's and XA's cars,so C.A.M.S would Homo them for the 1972 Bathurst Race.
And for the V8 LJ XU-1,Holden would of used up the 200-308 V8's and V8 M21 gearbox's in normal V8 HQ Holdens in 1972,they put the V8 XU-1 Sprintmasters and Brakes on the 200-1972 XU-1 Bathurst Specials to use them up,so not dumped in the Sea lol,Holden and Ford would of used them parts up.

I wonder if many old Fairlane drivers drove out of the friendly neighbourhood Ford dealership and suddenly developed a near GT sized grin?!*

Yes, I was certainly aware of the homologation of various premo components, including on the sought-after RPO GT Falcons. For example, the wheels. Plenty of regular GT's and copies have been retro-modded with the Ferrari inspired 5-spoke Globe 'Bathurst' model 15" alloys. The originals are a bit different to the later off-the-shelf version. They must be worth an absolute packet if not fitted to a car already.

Some stuff might have been dumped, but clearly not all.

Almost forgot about a mate of a mate of mine, who built a v8 powered LJ... I think it was police blue. Didnt take him long to put it into a spinn down the South Eastern Freeway at high speed and TOTAL it...... wont mention any names.... Whilst I havent personally seen it done, I have been involved in the use of vehicles that were supposedly dumped at sea after use. These were mostly prototype vehicles used for promo videos etc. Some driven on beaches through copious amounts of salt water or otherwise generally flogged for a good shot. These vehicles, whilst looking like the one about to be brought to market, shared very little interchangeable parts with the production model. They were often imported from overseas for the purpose, did not meet adr's or emission regs for this country and could never be registered. Once used for the purpose they had to be destroyed as the company had no interest in taking them back to the country of origin, due to the fact they were drenched in salt water, flogged and not able to be used for parts due to being unique prototypes and did not want the legal liabilities of having such parts being used on road going vehicles. (often fitted with totally abstract drivelines and interiors to the production vehicle). It is mainly the legal liability of parts wandering that led to the theory of them being dumped at sea as it was the only way they could guarantee that the car was gone for good.

I cant see any of the Big 3 Australian Car Manufacturer, Ford,Holden,Chysler putting there Prototypes in the Sea lol,Holden HQ is in Port Melbourne and there Prototypes were Built by Experimental Engineering in Port Melbourne and run and tested at Lang Lang, they had a crash testing place out at Lang Lang as well and used to bury there stuff at there Bones yard at Lang Lang allegedly.
This day and age,it is allegal to Dump any thing in the Sea by international law, after WW2 in the South Pacific the USA Forces dumped there Tanks and Planes and Weapons in the Sea,that is true, only time i have heard of anything in a huge amount dumped in the sea,i believe there is film footage of the USA Forces dumping that stuff into the sea.

1 XA GT Phase IV went down the production line. It was blue. The other 3 were made from GT's and used for rallying. The only 1 that made it down the line was recently sold by the Dentist who bought it in 1979 or thereabouts.

The only info I can provide is fairly subjective: that the Mystere is a clumsy, ill-conceived, kit-car-esque, wonky, classless add-on monkey. However, it is far BETTER than MOST of the fibreglass custo basket cases that have been applied to otherwise pretty good Holdens.

Im going to bring up an old thread, some of you seem to believe there is no more XU-2's on the road, well i was unaware of the XU-2's until early last year, turns out a friend of my brother in law owns a genuine one (yellow), hes a wheeler and dealer by trade and apparently picked it up for 15k. Its one of 3 ever built, i can only imagine how much it is worth

They never made any yellow LJ XU2 Torana's
1-LJ V8 Prototype (White)
1-LJ V8 Prototype (Strike me Pink)
1-LJ V8 Prototype (Lone o Ranger) Orange
and the Barney-Shirt Coloured (Pink/Lillac) LJ XU-1 that Styling Department did the Spoiler Kit for the V8 Program on, it was called the V8 Styling Car ????????????.
Now GMH say the prototypes were destroyed, but the Lone o Ranger Coloured LJ Prototype was Sold by GMH in early 1975, so not destroyed, the other two are a case for Scully and Mulder to look into without a doubt.

The recent posts re the XU2 name being considered but dropped are correct. Have researched with GMH archives, Pruneau, etc.
One v8 XU1 survived, but was sold as 6cyl several years later. This car was the design studio hack and was used to style the A9X style boot spoiler and rear facing bonnet scoop. Also used to do production line fitting checks of the 308 v8.
I know this because I bought the car in darwin f0r $4500 around 10 years ago.
Found the bogged up holes in teh rear guards where the spoiler wraparounds fitted, found the boot floor had been cut out and re welded in (roughly) - to test a massive 154 litre dual filler Bathurst tank, and found the doubled up spacers on the gearbox cross member which were necessary to permit the engine unit to be production line fitted.
It was painted originally in a totally unique colour (Barney's Shirt) which was a lilac colour.
I sold the vehicle to an Adelaide person during a period of making dumb decisions following a skull fracture ( regrets !) but can confirm from absolute first hand experience that the V8 Xu1 did exist, and did survive, even if with a 202 instead of the v8.
And BTW, while Harry Firth is a legendary character he is not infallible and just because he says the v8s were all destroyed doesnt mean he is correct. He alos missed teh Barney's Shirt lilac colour.
Hope this helps.

The Barney Shirt LJ XU1 was the Styling Version of the V8 LJ

The 3-GTR's were the V8 Prototypes, The Strike me Pink and White LJ GTR were the Bathurst Race Cars and the Lone o Ranger LJ GTR was the spare car, and the GTR Prototypes were the Cars that GMH Engineering used for the Production Line fitting checks not the Styling LJ XU1 Car, it was the Car that Styling did the Spoiler Kit on and GMH knocked back the Spoiler Kit due to costs.

XU4 is not Torana, it's the code for a van or ute with passenger tyres fitted there by reducing the GVM of the vehicle (to save on registration costs), the option was available from mid HJ on.
