Ford head on Holden 6

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any info regarding fitment of a ford alloy cross flow head from the 4/4.1lt onto a Holden 6.

I've heard of it being done before and apparently you need to fit it on backwards so that thermostat housing is on the rear and exhaust comes out the correct Holden way.

Also I here the head bolts are pretty close and some welding is required.

I think that if it is relatively straight forward it would be worth doing as YT alloy heads are very rare and cost a fortune.

I’m guessing the ford head would flow slightly better too, have larger valves etc.

Finally crossflow, this is the biggest benefit as it would allow a turbo or two quite easily.

Over head cam would be nice but I’m thinking of just using the pushrod version for now just to keep things simple, hell when BA twin cam heads become more available I may look into this. Haha imagine that Holden 6 twin cam, 24V!!! :)

Anyways if anyone has any info at all that would be great.

Thanks

Why bother? For the cost and associated heartache involved you could build yourself a top quality smallblock chev and throw the sixpot slug in the nearest river. If you're dead keen on the six just convert to a 265 Hemi.

Interesting idea, mate. I think it'd be a helluva lotta trouble, myself. But then so are jigsaw puzzles, and people still do 'em.
Go for it. If it works let us know.
Good on you for wanting to do something different. Ole mr. Fan up there may not realise it, but some of us are after something different than sheer brute horsepower, obtained the same way as EVERYBODY ELSE.
That's why I ride a motoguzzi instead of a Harley.
If the cylinder head will fit (I would have thought that the pushrods, etc. wouldn't line up? no idea) then probably the big valves, crossflow etc. would work as you describe.
I'm sure it COULD be done, anything can be done, it's just a machine, if you have the $$$ and the tools and the talent, you could probably fit a 747 turbine to a scooter, with a giant custom made holley feeding it. have fun.

Definately a complex operation!

Hey pinkie... do you remember seeing a pic on oldholden about a redmotor that had a DOHC quad valve head on it? That was funky in extreme.
IIRC the normal cam had no lobes, just the stuff for the oilpump.
DOHC was belt driven from a custom pully.

Complex and potentially powerful yes, but cheaper by far to just get a 308.

Never Drive A Car Younger Than Yourself!

The thing is I dont want a 308 or jap motor. I want to work with what I have. So many people give the Holden 6's crap it's not funny.

I like doing some things different rather than do the same as everyone else!

I believe the head that MasterPoobaa is talking about is the krogdahl twin cam 2V head, yes they are alright but I dont have $7000 to spend on just a head lol

Please keept his on topic please...

Something else to consider if you dont want to spend mega-bux on your holden 6,
for around 1500 you can get your red 186 modified balanced and pro stroked with a 221 ford crank, giving you around 235 cubes.
Not too bad, considering it costs about that to do a full pro rebuild anyway.

Have you considered supercharging?

no thanks, I already have a turbo setup planned. It's a blue 202 by the way. Strokers just arent my thing and from what I have heard about snapped cranks i'd rather stay away.

go the underdog!!!
nothing better than flogging a V8 with a sixpot!!
(or a mini for that matter!)
mmmm turbocharged red motor with 250 heads... wicked.
poohey, haven't seen the DOHC setup, anyone gotta link? Can only assume the original camshaft still drove the dizzy & fuel pump as well....?

Why not just drop a 4ltr in?

just install the 250 then you have the x-flow head you want and the extra 48 cubes more then the holden six?

but as somebody suggested before, just go a 265 Hemi? they aren't a common conversion, they still have parts available, they go hard, Still one of the quickest 6cyl motors ever produced.

I honestly don't think the 250 crossflow head will fit? it's phisically bigger isn't it?

Cheers
Thomo

I vaguely remember seeing one in a magazine a long time ago but I think it used the 3.9/4.0 type head(OHC), from what I remember it sounded like a big pain for little gain. Go for an alloy YT head in 12 port and put it on a 186/235 stroker bottom end, should be able to go over 300hp with the right cam and accessories without the hassles of converting ford parts to a holden.

If you can't be good, be good at it.

Holden V8, the ONLY way to move.

Ford Head on a Holden Six?
HELL I have a complete ZL Ford Fairlane just sitting here with a complete sweet ass Fuel Injection setup already sitting on 250ci's worth of ass kickin six, these use a Yamaha designed head and respond really well to a Turbo OR TWO!
$450 will see you set with the whole car, sad ass body but with 2x14x8" and 4x14x7" Aunger mags and the FULL Digital Dash, you would have a Holden Six killer hehe
I remember seein an old FC years ago I think it was with a FULL Fairlane interior and I think running gear, man for a Holden with a twist it was awesome!!
Just a thought, if ya interested let me know, but I certainly do like the way you think outside the circle, oval, triangle, square... whatever! lol
I hope you pull this one off, but I think size wise the Ford head is gonna have some serious overlap here?

A bloke i know told me had put an early 250 X-flow head on a 186/235 stroker.....it is bigger so what they do is machine up billet side covers (Lifter covers or whatever you want to call them).....then bolt the head down into the custom billet side plates (I think he was working on weekends at an engine-builder possibly cavehill engines in lilydale victoria.

In response to you not wanting to stroke a holden six well i have this to say.....apart from [Naughty Pottyword] i hope mine works and lasts for a long time.....I am getting a blue 202 block stroked to a 235 using a custom crank (One piece billet) with VW Diesel golf rods machined up to match...I have not seen the crank yet but it was sourced by my engine builder from somewhere in queensland. It was only $500 extra over getting the ford 220 crank cut and shut! I am blowing the motor on top of this so billet was the way to go....my engine builder was not going to put a blower on the cut & shut job as he said the crank would fex tooo much or some [Naughty Pottyword].......

A good move going for the Billet Crank!
Look thru one of my earlier posts in regards to the 221 Falcon cranks, they flex enough in the Ford block to spin bearings, that is why I suggested they may be ok for a Holden Six as Strokers aren't exactly known for their high revs, if you did plan on exceeding the 6,000rpm barrier I would have reason to believe major mayhem would be the final result, eventually...

The Ford Alloy cross flow head was designed by Honda.
