I'de say not much in that condition because it could be like NSW laws,it's illegal to repaint them. Then judging by the background I'de say you've got 2 chances of getting the car or plates off the old farmer!..:)

Really? Even if you are just clearing up a fading letter / number?

A copper would have to be having a bad day to fine you for just trying to do the right thing.
But i guess it all comes down to making money these days.

Don't you just find it ironic how they are geniues for coming up with cleverer and cleverer ways to tax / part you from your money but, they just get dumber and dumber with how to spend (waste it)

when it seemed ok - in fact encouraged to touch them up...but then came the cameras and so now it's a No No...special anti reflective paint and so on can only be used on the plates - otherwise the camera pics may not be clear enough - as you know I painted mine and it didn't stop me getting a speeding fine from a "safety" camera...even had a look at the photo and the plates were good...it was day though and maybe night is different

I think it was the black and gold personal plates in Qld that didn't show up on the cameras so PPQ had to reissue all of them.

Disclaimer :- The above is purely speculation and is only posted for entertainment purposes!!!

I do a lot of work with Number plate reading cameras, for car parks not speed cameras dont worry LOL, most personalised plates in QLD are non reflective and hard to pick up on cameras especially infra red, as this is what mostly reads the plate, its a software program that deciphers the IR picture, Toowong village is one place i look after and a lot of people with personalisied plates get get free parking cos it wont read them.

A number plate cover made from old crazed perspex looks clear from straight on, but once get you more than a few degrees from straight on it can't be read.
I had one like this I made until some idiot backed into my car in a carpark and broke it.
The hard part is finding the old, crazed perspex.
If you are pepainting an early, non-reflective NSW yellow plate, Supercheap Citrus Yellow spray cans are a near perfect match for the yellow. Not that I've ever done it. LOL

Old is good.

I had put an older style NSW black on yellow plates on hold at the then RTA, went to collect them around 12 months later they wouldn't return them, stating they had to be remade as they were damaged and faded which was utter cr&p as they rarely saw daylight on the car they were on and lived behind Perspex covers, there wasn't so much as a stone chip on them. After I blew up the truth was revealed that the government wanted the older non reflective plates off cars as they wouldn't be picked up by the speed cameras in poor light.
Was also politely advised to remove the tongue and ball off the towbar of my 63Valiant Safari even though the plate was in the factory recessed area and the towbar had been fitted since 1963 without any previous issues.
Also got booked because the tailgail hinges on my box trailer snapped, I'd mounted the plate in the upright position on the side, wasnt obscured, totally readable, I asked the copper if he could read it and if it was legible and current to that trailer or if he believed I was trying to be deceptive. He agreed with me, just stated that that's not where it was meant to be mounted. Funny thing was a horse float and Harley went past as I was getting booked mounted the same way.
Also had some new plates made for my Valiant and put in storage, dark green lettering on black background (suited the colours of the car) then the dopes realised that the speed cameras might have trouble reading them, so they said they remade them whilst in storage to green on white (surprisingly they didn't bill me) didn't even ask me. All because AM shock jock carrying on about them the RTA gave into the pressure. Just another way to book ya... Ka-Ching
