Gearbox Help Needed!

Hi All. I'm having trouble with a Three on the Tree. It's in a very original 74 HQ (hasn't been driven in about two years). I can move the shifter up and down (in neutral ?) but it wont budge forward or backward (with or without clutch depression).

From the engine bay I can click the rear (closer to firewall)linkage arm into three different positions but the back one will only wiggle a bit. (i.e. linkages not jammed together)

After rolling the car back a few inches (I had to put weights on clutch pedal), I can now move the front linkage to thee different positions, but still cant budge shifter forward or back.

Is this a problem with the gearbox or could it be a jammed shifter arm?

Anyone got any ideas? Which linkage does what? What position should they be in for neutral? Will I need to pull the side plate off of gearbox? (I have another 3 speed, I can play with but have no idea if it's any good. It also clicks to three positions on the front linkage (front on box, rear on steering column) but doesn't seem to move on the rear connection)

Cheers & thanks.

I believe there is a nylon bush in the bottom of the steering column that can cause these problems.
My sister once sent a good HJ to the wreckers because of gearshift problems in the column because she was too lazy/stupid to take it to a mechanic to get the bush she was told it needed.
As for me, I used that worn bush as the excuse I gave my wife to put a Toyota 5 speed in my HQ ute.

thanks OisG. Do you know where I can get info on pulling the steering column apart? (I know how to get it out of the car)

This is a rare spares kit. It might help. https://www.rarespar...
Also check the rods for wear closely, the same goes for the selector levers on the gearbox.

Old is good.

sounds like its stuck in 1st.
Reverse is, back towards the driver and up,
1st is, back towards the driver and down,
2nd is, away from the driver and up, and then 3rd is away from the driver and down.

its a "H" pattern shift but on your steering column.

if its stuck in first, open the bonnet and try and pull the selector rods up or down, you can use a bit of force. it should drop into neutral.

when changing from 1st to 2nd always pull the lever towards you and up to neutral, let the lever move itself in neutral towards the dash and then lift it up to 2nd,

i haven't had a column shift for about 30 years but i think if you put each of the linkages into the middle position that should be neutral.

if that doesnt help i could probably find the hq gearbox manual for you.

Cheers Steve, some info from the manual would be great. The car is stuck in 2nd & 3rd, I can't get the shift stick to move back (towards dash) to engage the other half of the H pattern. I can move the linkages at the column and at the box. It seems the problem is with the stick shift. Even with the linkage arms disconnected (from column to box) I can only move the stick up and down but not back and forth.

from a Gregory's manual re dismantled view of steering column and instructions to dismantle and assemble...if you believe the problem lies within the column this may help you...I haven't had to do it so can't verify if the instructions are useful..hope it helps ps please note dismantle 2 and 3 should be swapped in order..my mistake in labeling images. Looking at that dismantled view - maybe start with taking out your control lever -as it appears from the symptoms you describe that the lever isn't moving the control tube up and down or the tube is getting jammed on something - reverse lamp switch?

Closest to the dash is 2nd,top, and 3rd bottom.
Closest to the driver is reverse, top, and 1st, bottom.
