How should I build my one tonner the right way

Right I'm 24 and this is my first project car. we'll I've bought a 1984 wb one tonner off a friend as a project. Now he has purchased it from a lad in Moree (who I've spoken to) and said he bought it not as a write off but as parts off a guy that deals old cars in Toowoomba QLD about 10 year ago, he had no paper work to it or number plate. I've put the vin and chassis number in those vin checkers and it comes back with no info on the car. It is confusing aswell because the vin has only 14 numbers not the 17 it needs. These are the Utes badge numbers (please help decoding them aswell I have tried but didn't get it all decoded)

Vin 8M60LD L120785B

Model WB8WM60
Body number 120785-A
Trim 3038-66V
Paint 1J 052-D
Built APR 84
Eng 14 Trans M22. Axle m22

Comp plate says
Wb cab chassis
04-84 DWB 51572A (which is on chassis rail aswell)

Also spoke to QLD government and RMS and nothing. Spoke to the people at car history and they said they can't bring up anything before 1989 why is this and what does that mean for when I do go get it rego'd I just wanted to see if this not going to be a long hard road or a waste of money and time?

Also do I have to take it back to the six or can keep the 253 or even a 308 to get it rego'd in nsw?

Or what will I have to do if I dump a ls1 into it? Does the engineer have to build it or can I build it up and take it to one to go over it?? and tthen try to register it? What are the steps??

Please help I want to start building her!!!!

Your 14 digit VIN is correct for that period , 17 digits came later. It was built in Adelaide March 1974 originaly 202 but the 253 is "legal" , you may have trouble fitting a 308 as the commercials were never factory fitted with 308 but I have heard of so called "special orders" that may have flaunted this rule , should have no trouble getting rego as tags are intact and you should have some piece of paper ( receipt )relating to your purchase ( or be able to get one if you bought of a mate ) as "proof of origin". good luck mate.

Any of the six, 253 (4.2) or 308 (5litre) will be OK for rego in NSW as they were all options for the car. They will have to be a blue motor as the blue motor was ADR27A compliant (pollution regulations). Any systems in the car will have to be what the factory to cars with that motor. (brakes, suspension etc. An engineer isn't needed when fitting anything that was available as a factory option for that model series.
The only number you will need for rego is the number stamped on the chassis. This is the one that identifies the car. The others just describe the car's features and it's production serial number.
To put an LS1 isn't just a simple matter of bolting it in. The car will have to meet the pollution regulations applicable at the time the LS1 was made, which will probably mean catalytic converters, bigger brakes etc. Other blokes here will know more about this than me.
When going LS1 the first, and most important thing to do, before you do anything is to talk to an engineer about what you want to do and ask him what is necessary and how it should be done. Listen to him and follow his advice. The only blokes I have ever known who had trouble with an engineer tried to tell the engineer the rules. One built a VW trike without consulting anyone and argued with and was told to go away by three engineers before he shut his mouth and listened.
