Easy AM Radio Conversion for $25

For $25 I have successfully converted my original push button radio to give me FM radio and a Bluetooth connection to my phone. This was achieved by utilising the electronics of a modern unit purchased from eBay (item 161777014536) for under $25.

The idea was to place the infra red remote control sensor behind the centre window of the rear dial face(the round circle showing the number of transistors - in my case 11. And use the push buttons to activate the most common functions without the remote. This includes the answer and hang up function for the phone when connected via Bluetooth.

To provide power to the modern radio I soldered a wire from the original radio's on/off switch so that the modern radio would be powered when the original radio was turned on. The yellow wire from the modern radio also needs power all the time to function and to hold the settings memory.

The black infra red sensor has three legs. Carefully unsolder or cut the sensor legs from the original radio to be relocated behind the dial. Use three different wire colours to make it easy to know which wire goes to which leg.

The beauty of the modern radio was that the function of the buttons were controlled by grounding the function connection. In other words if you soldered a wire to the correct side of the switch (usually the opposite side to the side connected to a fatter circuit track) and touched it to ground the function would be activated.

I cut a piece of veroboard to fit behind the dial backing to hold the infra red sensor and to provide ground plates for the functions I had chosen for each push button. I then soldered springs to each push button that would ground each function I required when the push button was pushed. The functions I chose from left to right were on/off, scan down, scan up, mode and band. When the mode is Bluetooth the band button will answer an incoming phone call and the mode button will hang the call up. If you push the band button with the phone connected without an incoming call the phone will dial the last person you called or who called you. All hands free and legal! You will need to wire in the microphone from the modern radio somewhere too. I will mount mine behind the heater control out of sight.

My idea was to use the original radio as per normal through its dash speaker. As explained the original radio is not harmed other than some solder on the push buttons and the power button which can be removed. If I want to use the modern radio I simply turn down the original radio. You could connect the original radio to the AUX socket of the modern radio and play the AM radio in AUX mode.

Anyway I thought I would share this idea as I'm sure it could be implemented in some form with any type of classic push button radio. Have fun fiddling. For $25 you don't have much to lose!

Being a techno dummy, I only understood about 60% of what you explained. But it sounds simple, and damn clever..

"If your car has quarter vents, a diff at the back, and was available with wind-down windows, you may talk to me.
Otherwise I am not interested. Amen."

The seller I originally bought from has been sold out but I have found another seller for the same unit. eBay item 161777014536
This unit is $22 so I have revised the item code and cost to convert to $25
