yep road fatalities peaked in the late 60s early 70s despite significantly less registered vehicles...wearing of seat belts, drink driving initiatives and road improvements have gone a long way to reduce...the fatalities per 100,000 is today less than a third what it was in the 60s and 70s

The Australian BBQ's and parties with friends and family our parents enjoyed in the 60's and 70's are long gone thanks to money being spent on policing .05 and speeding when if it was spent on 21st century roads ie. gravel run offs not trees and power poles, gravel median strips or concrete barriers, instead of oncoming vehicles passing at 110kph less than 1/2 a metre at times, then you would see a real drop in fatalities. Unfortunately safe roads cost and policing friends and families enjoying face not phone time brings in revenue!
Apart from slow ongoing roadworks on too few major roads, most roads still used in 2017 are the same ones that were being used in the 60's and 70's.

I see nothing wrong with policing .05 to the full extent of the law. I personally think it should be .0 if you want to drive.
My father was very nearly killed by a drunk 40 years ago. It left him with lifelong migraines and back pain. When you are a kid it isn't nice listening to your father in bed crying in pain until the doctor arrives and gives him a shot of morphine to knock him out for 12 hours or more.

Sorry to hear the pain your father and family have had to live with.
You say it was a drunk who was the cause, is that someone driving at .049? It was still .08 for years in Canberra.
I know all to well about chronic pain and a 4year morphine dependency. I came off a dirt bike 20years ago after partying all night. It left me a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair with no body at fault, no compensation, and a life that has never been the same as the 33years I lived before my ACCIDENT!
There's been plenty before me just being a young man and plenty more to come. It isn't fate or destiny, it just happens. You just think it isn't going to happen to you, or your father?
These days I get a lot of enjoyment driving my EH yet every blind bend or every passing truck on a country road can at times leave me thinking 'this road is madness'it was unsafe 30years ago and always probably will be?
People are not infallible, safer roads I say again just need to be.
